What Martin O’Neill said about Celtic just hours before appointment will have Rangers fans howling
Rangers fans will have watched on in sheer joy as Celtic imploded on Monday evening.
Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager, meaning that the man who terrorised Rangers for so long is finally gone.
Owner Dermot Desmond released a wild statement on Rodgers, essentially calling him a liar, and saying that he contributed to a toxic culture in Parkhead.
Martin O’Neill has been placed in charge, and Gers supporters should take notice of something that he said before being appointed.

Martin O’Neill dismissed Celtic and Rangers as title contenders
Rangers are nowhere near Scottish Premiership contention, but Celtic also find themselves eight points behind leaders Hearts.
O’Neill dismissed both sides’ title chances, including the one that he is now the manager of, and predicted that Derek McInnes’ side would get the job done.
Speaking on talkSPORT on 27 October, just hours before he was given the job at Celtic Park, he said: “Celtic can actually lose games, whereas before they looked invincible in matches.
“Rangers are no threat whatsover. They are so far adrift it’s untrue. This is the moment, this is the time for Hearts.”
Why Rangers fans will love what O’Neill said
While it is a damning indictment of the mistakes that the Light Blues have made this season, O’Neill’s assessment of the title race, is also a huge slight against the side that he is now in charge of.
O’Neill has essentially admitted that he now faces an extremely tough challenge to overhaul the Jambos at the top of the league.
- Celtic are eight points behind the league leaders
- Rangers are 13 points adrift of the top spot
- The Bears are only five points behind their arch-rivals
The idea of Celtic struggling, and the Northern Irishman already basically conceding that the title race may be beyond his new side, should excite Gers supporters, who have endure a dismal few months of their own.
If he does think that the squad is good enough to stop the Tynecastle side from winning the league, then surely Danny Rohl’s side have a chance to catch up to their Glasgow rivals too.
It is not the kind of admission that you would want a new manager to be making, and while he was not in the job yet, his opinion cannot have changed in just a matter of hours.
