Ally McCoist will be furious as ‘unbelievable’ SPFL announcement made for Hibernian vs Rangers

Rangers travel to Easter Road as they take on Hibs in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday.

Danny Rohl is looking for back-to-back wins following Rangers’ 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Rohl’s appointment has been warmly received by Gers fans, who are excited to turn over a new leaf following Russell Martin’s disastrous reign.

Fifth-placed Rangers face a Hibs side that has won successive Scottish Premiership games to lift them up to third in the table.

Nick Walsh controversially appointed as Hibs vs Rangers referee

Nick Walsh has been appointed as the referee for Wednesday night’s match, much to the anger of Gers fans and Ally McCoist.

Coincidentally, Walsh officiated Rangers’ clash with Hibs in the Premier Sports Cup earlier this season.

However, Walsh’s unpopularity lies with the decision to send off Mohamed Diomande for a shove on Dundee United player Kevin Holt on 26 January 2025.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 27 January , McCoist said: “It is probably one of the worst decisions I have ever seen in my life – the boy Diomande, it’s a shocking decision. … Oh my goodness, it is the worst decision, it is absolutely unbelievable how the referee thinks it is a red.”

Having been asked to go to the screen by VAR official Dan Robertson to potentially change his on-field call to give Diomande a red card, Walsh questionably stuck with his original decision.

Rightfully so, McCoist and thousands of other Gers fans were livid with Walsh, despite the red card not having an overall impact in Rangers’ 3-1 win on that day.

However, this isn’t the only time Walsh has been under scrutiny for his performances when officiating matches involving Rangers.

Rangers fans won’t forget Nico Raskin’s ghost goal against Hibs

In the last league meeting between the pair, Walsh failed to spot Nico Raskin’s shot clearly crossing the line.

The match took place on 17 May, and Raskin poked a shot under Hibs goalkeeper Jordan Smith, with the ball crossing the line before Rocky Bushiri cleared it away.

Walsh did not spot this in real time, and VAR did not intervene as there weren’t enough clear images at the time to award the goal.

Barry Ferguson was left furious with the decision as the game went on to finish 2-2.

Rohl will be hoping that Walsh doesn’t significantly impact Wednesday night’s game, whilst fans will be expecting the referee to make yet another blunder in a Rangers match.
