Russell Martin now in running for shock Premier League job after Rangers sack

Russell Martin is being tipped to return to management in England after being dismissed by Rangers at the start of October.

Rangers sacked Martin just 123 days into his reign after a 1-1 draw with Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership left them with just one league win in eight games.

The 39-year-old was only hired by the Gers in June, with his exit earlier this month meaning he’s gone down in history as the Ibrox club’s shortest-serving permanent manager.

After a protracted search to find a replacement, Danny Rohl was hired as the new Rangers manager last Monday.

Martin is now on the search for his fifth job in management, but recent news south of the border suggests he could land on his feet in the Premier League.

Russell Martin touted for Wolves job amid angry scenes at Molineux

With Wolves losing 3-2 at home to Burnley on Sunday, the bookmakers have opened the market on who might replace Vitor Pereira in charge at Molineux.

Pereira was involved in an angry confrontation with Wolves fans after their defeat to the newly-promoted Clarets left them bottom of the Premier League table and without a win in nine games.

While he’s an outsider for the job as it stands, ex-Southampton boss Martin is in contention to replace Pereira, with the current odds listing him at 12/1.

Gary O’Neil, who was in charge at Wolves before Pereira took over, is the 6/5 favourite, while Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is the current second favourite at 7/4.

Former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is listed at 4/1, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was briefly linked with the Rangers job this month, is in at 6/1.

As per stats by Sofascore, Pereira has won just two games in all competitions this season, with his 18 per cent win-rate worse than the 30 per cent Martin managed at Ibrox before he was axed.

However, as clubs start to panic about their league positions, more changes are being made as the managerial merry-go-round starts to develop.

Meaning that the Wolves job isn’t the only one that Martin is currently in the running for.

Russell Martin also linked with League One job in England

It would be a huge shock if Martin were to land himself a Premier League job after how things went down for him at Southampton and Rangers.

His managerial career is no doubt on a bit of a nosedive right now, so if he returns to management soon in England, it’s likely that he’d go back into the Championship or lower.

Peterborough United sacked Darren Ferguson on Saturday after they were left bottom of League One thanks to a 2-1 loss to Blackpool.

Luke Williams is the overwhelming 1/6 favourite to replace Ferguson but Steven Evans (5/1) and Martin (8/1) are also among the frontrunners.

In other Rangers news, Everton fans have had it with Nathan Patterson

According to Everton insider The Bobble, former Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson has undergone a minor hernia operation.

He’s currently sidelined with a bruised foot, so he has used his time off to go under the knife to sort out his hernia issue.

It is understood that he’ll be ruled out for three to four weeks.

Everton fans have reacted to the news, with one X user, @NevadaTubbs, saying: “Back to Rangers for him! Might get £3m back.”
