Steven Naismith loved what ‘excellent’ Rangers star did vs Kilmarnock despite Ibrox crowd frustration

Steven Naismith singled out one particular Rangers star for praise during their 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Derek Cornelius, Danilo and Youssef Chermiti handed Rangers three points, after George Stanger had equalised for the visitors shortly before half-time.

The victory in the Premiership saw Danny Rohl record the first three points of his reign in Govan, as his side also notched their first league victory of the campaign on home turf in the process.

It was an afternoon that delivered plenty of promise at Ibrox, and one man shone in a key moment of the game, despite some brief unrest from the supporters.

Jayden Meghoma hailed for ‘excellent’ moment in Rangers victory

Jayden Meghoma has had a difficult start at Rangers since he arrived on loan from Brentford in the middle of August.

The 19-year-old’s performances since his move north of the border have left a lot to be desired so far, not least on Thursday night, when he was at the centre of a woeful team performance in the embarrassing defeat to Brann.

However, the left-back turned in a much brighter display in the win over Kilmarnock, and topped his encouraging showing off with an assist for Danilo’s goal.

The Englishman delivered a deep cross to the back post which was expertly nodded home by his striker in the 51st minute.

Naismith heaped praise on the youngster for his moment of quality, which came after a brief murmouring of discontent from the fans following some disjointed wing play.

“It was an excellent ball into the box from Meghoma,” the former Gers star said on BBC Sportsound (26 October).

“There was a little bit of frustration from the crowd. In those wide areas, the combinations and the forward runs probably haven’t been worked on that much.

“He (Meghoma) is forced into getting it out of his feet, and it’s an excellent ball right to the back post, Danilo’s between the centre halves, and he heads into the ground and in off the far post. It’s an excellent time to score the second goal.”

Jayden Meghoma has to play ahead of Max Aarons

Max Aarons hasn’t had the desired impact at Rangers since his arrival over the summer, as he has been unable to use his significant experience to positive effect.

The Bournemouth loanee has often operated slightly out of position on the left side of the defence, but that has frequently left his side looking relatively disjointed in possession.

Meghoma has done little to suggest that is a top-quality option until now, but after his showing on Sunday, it is hard to see how Aarons will get the shirt back from the youngster any time soon.

Consistency will be the key for Meghoma moving forward, especially considering that he has now set the standard for himself in the long-term.
