‘Danny Rohl makes really brave Djedi Gassama call in Rangers win vs Kilmarnock – This is why it worked’

Danny Rohl’s tactical decisions paid off as Rangers put an end to their barren run against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Rangers beat Kilmarnock 3-1, with goals from Derek Cornelius, Danilo and Yousseff Chermiti handing the German a dream first game in charge at Ibrox.

Crossing was the key for the Gers, with the first goal coming from a free-kick, while the second was down to a superb piece of play from Jayden Meghoma.

Mohamed Diomande was superb for Rangers against Kilmarnock, with the midfielder’s return from injury coming at the right time for Rohl.

And the aforementioned Meghoma was hailed for his impact against Kilmarnock, with the left-back catching the eye in several key moments.

Danny Rohl makes interesting Djeidi Gassama decision

Rohl made several changes to his Rangers line-up for the visit of Kilmarnock, after what had been a terrible night in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Gers were battered by Brann, and were left to trudge off the pitch as angry fans filled the air with boos.

The atmosphere was very different at Ibrox, however, with Rangers finally looking to have put in a performance that garnered some positivity for the near future.

Neil McCann picked out one particularly interesting quirk from Rohl’s team, which he shared while talking to BBC Sportscene on Sunday.

Gassama, again, brave choice to play a right-winger as your right-wing-back,” the former Rangers winger said.

But you can get away with it because it can always slide around with James Tavernier playing right-centre-back in a three. That’s the difference that we got today.

Gassama was stifled by Rohl selection

Djeidi Gassama has been so impressive for Rangers since arriving from Sheffield Wednesday, often starting on the wing and easily standing out among his teammates.

But his goals and assists were not leading to points for Russell Martin‘s team, suggesting that, while the system was getting the best out of him, it was not getting the best out of the team as a whole.

Rohl has looked to change that, and while the Frenchman was stifled by the switch – failing to create a chance and taking just one shot – Rangers were much improved.

The German will hope, with time, that his new formation can provide benefits for both the team and Gassama, but ultimately, points are of the highest priority for the Gers.
