Hugh Keevins details damning Rangers issue as James Tavernier told to step down

Danny Rohl will undoubtedly want to stamp his authority at Rangers as they face Kilmarnock on Sunday.

James Tavernier was frustrated after losing to Brann in the Europa League, with the captain branding the Gers’ performance disgraceful.

Rohl was handed a reality check at Brann Stadion on 23 October, with the German manager losing his first game in charge of the Light Blues.

The Glaswegian outfit will now welcome Kilmarnock to Ibrox on 26 October, and it will be interesting to see whether he makes any dramatic changes in G51 to turn things around.

Rangers lack leaders amid James Tavernier concern

Hugh Keevins doesn’t think there’s any player in the Gers’ squad right now capable of taking the captaincy from Tavernier.

The veteran broadcaster believes the Light Blues lack leaders at Ibrox when one fan suggested he should give up the armband.

Tavernier recently spoke with the Union Bears after the 2-2 draw with Dundee United, and it’s hard to see who can replace him as of now.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on 24 October, Keevins said: “The trouble you have with Tavernier is that Rangers aren’t a club full of leaders of men. Tavernier has had the job for 10 years, and I don’t see anyone who can take over from him, even if it were remotely on his mind to give up the armband.”

While some supporters have suggested Nicolas Raskin as worthy of leading the Gers, the midfielder’s current contract in G51 expires in 2027, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them sell him soon if he doesn’t sign a new deal.

While John Souttar and Jack Butland are other senior members of the Glaswegian outfit’s squad, their inconsistent performances don’t instil confidence in many fans.

Danny Rohl can pick surprise name as next captain at Ibrox

Tavernier’s time at Ibrox seems to be coming to an end, with the right-back in the final year of his deal at the Gers.

Rangers undoubtedly need to plan for a future without the 33-year-old, but there’s hardly anyone in the current squad capable of replacing him.

Max Aarons’ loan move from Bournemouth has been a disaster, while Dujon Sterling’s persistent fitness issues at Ibrox have been frustrating.

Djeidi Gassama has arguably been the only standout summer signing for the Light Blues this season, and having previously worked with Rohl, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the forward take more responsibility in G51 next season with the armband.
