‘What I’ve heard about Kevin Thelwell influence at Rangers after loss vs Brann’

Kevin Thelwell has made his position at Rangers tenuous as fan frustration spilt over after the 3-0 loss to Brann on Thursday.

Danny Rohl faced defeat at the Brann Stadion on 24 October, and the German manager certainly must’ve got a reality check of the task at hand in G51.

Supporters confronted Thelwell and Patrick Stewart after the loss, underscoring the anger among the Ibrox faithful.

The sporting director’s position has come under the scanner ever since Russell Martin’s struggles and the underwhelming recruitment in the summer, but it looks like Andrew Cavenagh has complete faith in him.

Kevin Thelwell plays part in picking Rangers starting lineups

Keith Jackson has revealed that Thelwell may have played a part in picking the Gers’ starting lineup against Brann.

The Daily Record journalist has heard that the sporting director played a part in selecting the Light Blues’ team when Steven Smith was in charge against Dundee United at Ibrox, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the same happened in Norway.

It feels like the former Everton chief had taken the reins as the Glaswegian outfit were without a permanent head coach.

Speaking on Hotline Live on 23 October, Jackson said: “What I’ve heard, whether it’s right or wrong, but I suspect it’s correct — I think Thelwell had a hand in picking the team at the weekend when Steven Smith was in charge. Would it surprise me if there was a little bit of influence from the sporting director in that lineup? Not in the slightest.”

Thelwell should’ve arguably left with Martin, given that the sporting director played a role in his appointment at the Gers.

Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises tried to lead the charge to appoint a new head coach after sacking the former Southampton boss, but Rohl’s arrival seems to have the ex-Everton chief’s fingerprint all over it.

Kevin Thelwell to blame as Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat turn down job

Steven Gerrard was ready to work with Thelwell at Ibrox, but the Liverpool icon wanted to have the final say on recruitment.

While Rangers were heavily linked with the Englishman’s return to Govan, it feels like he didn’t fancy the current hierarchical structure in G51.

Similarly, Kevin Muscat turned down the vacancy at the Light Blues after advanced talks with the American owners, which doesn’t bode well.

The Ibrox faithful were hoping for Gerrard or Muscat’s return, but they’ve got Rohl, and while fans will back the German manager, the same can’t be said of decision-makers if things continue to go south.
