Tom English tears into player who’s ‘symbol of what is wrong at Rangers’ after what he saw vs Brann
Rangers sunk to a third Europa League defeat of the season after losing 3-0 to Brann on Thursday.
Danny Rohl’s first game in charge ended in a miserable fashion, as the Light Blues put in a disastrous performance in Norway.
Goals from Emil Kornvig, Jacob Lungi Sorensen, and Noah Holm have left Rangers rock bottom of the Europa League table.
Rangers’ 3-0 loss to Brann has seen the side stoop to a new low, with one marquee signing player disappointing yet again.

Youssef Chermiti’s performance vs Brann typifies Rangers
Chermiti joined Rangers for a fee of £8million, with add-ons taking the deal up to £10m.
However, the 21-year-old striker is yet to score a goal for the Bears, with all of his starts coming in the Europa League.
BBC Sport Scotland journalist Tom English was hugely critical of Chermiti’s performance against Brann.
He said: “This must have been the first of the red flags for Rohl. It wasn’t just that Chermiti failed to score; it was that he never really threatened to score.”
“So far, the striker is proving to be a symbol of what is wrong at Rangers and what Rohl must somehow fix – poor decision-making and the bizarre feat of investing a lot of money on a team only to make it even worse.”
- Chermiti scored six goals in 17 matches for Sporting B and Sporting U19
- He scored three goals in 22 appearances for the Sporting first team
- Following his move to England, Chermiti didn’t score a single goal for Everton in 24 appearances
Chermiti was once again awful against Brann, with the Portuguese striker tamely planting a header from point-blank range in his only real chance during the match.
Kevin Thelwell pushed through the Chermiti transfer, despite the general consensus that it was baffling to spend that much money on a player who was completely unproven.
It’s yet another sign of negligence under the 49ers, with cash being spent irresponsibly under the orders of Thelwell and Patrick Stewart.

Thelwell has made plenty of mistakes during his tenure at Ibrox, although the signing of Chermiti might be the biggest one yet.

Youssef Chermiti’s Rangers move was never going to work
Spending this kind of fee on a player who hasn’t scored a goal since 2023 is a disgrace in any level of football.
Whilst Chermiti is obviously not to blame for the extortionate fee Rangers paid to Everton, Gers fans will have expected much more from him so far.
As he remains behind Bojan Miovski in the pecking order for league games, it’s laughable that Rangers spent £10m on a back-up striker.
Chermiti’s failures in front of goal speak volumes as to how badly Rangers are run at the moment, and as English said, it signifies exactly what’s wrong with the club.
