Youssef Chermiti awful again, Danny Rohl must change one thing – Three things learned in dismal Rangers defeat vs Brann

Rangers crashed to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat against Brann in Danny Rohl’s first game in charge.

Goals from Emil Kornvig, Jacob Lungi Sorensen, and Noah Holm compounded even more misery on the Bears’ disastrous start to the season on Thursday.

The result leaves Rangers with zero points from their opening three Europa League matches, with the former Sheffield Wednesday manager desperate to excel in the competition.

Danny Rohl was appointed as Rangers manager on Monday, and the defeat to Brann was the perfect opportunity for him to assess his players, yet it may have created more questions.

Youssef Chermiti clearly out of his depth

Brann’s 3-0 win over Rangers showcased the monumental task Rohl has on his hands.

Chermiti joined Rangers for £10million from Everton in the summer, with the move being pushed through by sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

Having started all three of Rangers’ Europa League games this season, Chermiti has looked devoid of confidence and lacking in any quality, especially for that price.

In the first half against Brann, he spurned a point-blank header for possibly in first goal in blue, before eventually being taken off for Danilo in the 76th minute.

Whilst Chermiti isn’t in control of how much the Bears spent on him, it’s up to him to prove his worth to Rohl, and he has clearly not done that on 23 October.

Bojan Miovski was favoured over Chermiti under Russell Martin for league games, and based on current evidence, it looks extremely likely that it will remain that way under Rohl.

Danny Rohl must address woeful defensive issues

The defending for all three goals was absolutely criminal, yet this isn’t something Light Blues supporters will be surprised by.

Nasser Djiga and John Souttar have struck up a disastrous partnership in defence under Martin, yet Rohl opted to go for the same pairing, leaving Derek Cornelius on the bench.

If it weren’t for some of Jack Butland’s heroics throughout the season, Rangers would have dropped a lot more points, and against Brann, we once again saw their lack of resilience.

For the opener, one simple pass through the heart of the team led to Kornvig’s goal, and the defending from a wide free-kick was even worse for the second.

This is the first thing Rohl must address as the squad continues to deal with the hangover from Martin’s reign.

Danny Rohl’s 4-2-3-1 system hugely ineffective against Brann

Rohl was known for his direct and fast-paced style of play at Sheffield Wednesday, leading them to an unexpected 12th-placed finish in the 2024-25 Championship season.

Rangers were consistently carved open by a brilliant Brann side, with the scoreline accurately reflecting how the match went.

It’s obviously too early to judge the 36-year-old after only overseeing two training sessions, yet the performance was completely unacceptable.

It was a sobering start to the Rohl era, and Rangers must improve drastically at Ibrox against Kilmarnock on Sunday, with three points the only answer.
