Ally McCoist backtracks after ’embarrassing’ Djeidi Gassama incident in Rangers defeat vs Brann

Rangers lost in pathetic circumstances once again in the Europa League, but it was a moment in the first half that left Ally McCoist sick to his stomach.

The Europa League is proving to be a real test for Rangers this season, after yet another defeat in the competition.

Rangers suffered a 3-0 loss away to Brann on Thursday night, in what was Danny Rohl‘s first game in charge of the Glaswegian outfit.

However, while there were several talking points throughout the clash in Norway, and certainly most of them negative, one in particular left McCoist feeling uneasy, with replays forcing him to change his thinking.

Djeidi Gassama unfortunate to be carded in Rangers defeat

Djeidi Gassama is likely to thrive at Rangers under Rohl, having showcased his ability under his guidance when the duo were at Sheffield Wednesday.

That certainly wasn’t to be the case on Thursday, though the Frenchman was involved in a controversial moment in the first half of the clash.

Just as the former Owls man was shielding the ball out of play for a Rangers goal kick, Emil Kornvig was less than happy with the way he was doing so.

A small altercation ensued, in which Kornvig fell dramatically to the floor holding his face, and McCoist initially thought that Gassama was lucky to escape with just a yellow card.

However, as the replay was shown live on TNT Sports, he backtracked on his original opinion and said: “I take it back. To be brutally honest, [Kornvig] should have been booked.

“That’s absolutely embarrassing for Kornvig; he should hold his head in shame, that boy.

Danny Rohl will now be aware of the challenge that lies ahead

If he wasn’t when he first took the job, he certainly is now.

Rangers are in turmoil this season, and there is an obscene amount of work needed if Rohl is to turn things around.

Their latest result in Europe means that it is rapidly approaching a full calendar year since the Gers last kept a clean sheet away from home.

That is the main port of call for Rohl to address at Ibrox, though the entire team just looked disjointed once again on Thursday night.
