Rangers have dodged a bullet with Danny Rohl appointment as shock candidate now revealed

Danny Rohl’s appointment at Rangers hasn’t been met with the level of excitement that many would have hoped for.

The likes of Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat both appeared in line to take the job at one stage, only for both situations to fall through, with Rohl ultimately the beneficiary.

Rangers fans have already expressed concerns with Rohl given his lack of top-level experience, and as a result, he arguably finds himself on the back foot before he has even taken charge of his first game.

The 36-year-old may not necessarily have been the ideal candidate to take the reins at Ibrox, but he is surely a better option than this man, who was also in the frame.

Goncalo Feio was interviewed by Rangers

Rohl had initially withdrawn from consideration for the Rangers job, but then quickly came back into the frame after talks with Muscat broke down.

The Govan outfit spent over two weeks searching for Russell Martin’s successor, and in the end, the former Sheffield Wednesday boss appeared to be one of their final remaining options.

That doesn’t reflect particularly well on the German, who hasn’t been overly well-received by the fans so far, but they will surely be glad that they didn’t end up with the potential alternative.

It has now emerged that Rangers interviewed former Legia Warsaw boss Goncalo Feio for the vacant position, according to GiveMeSport.

The 35-year-old was understood to have held “productive talks” with Kevin Thelwell about a move to Ibrox, and would have undoubtedly been a hugely surprising appointment.

Feio led Legia to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Conference League last season, but his CV is hugely uninspiring for a club of Rangers’ standing.

He also left French second-tier side Dunkerque without managing a game this summer, after a disagreement with their sporting director Demba Ba.

Rohl may not have been many people’s preferred option, but the Gers have surely dodged a bullet by appointing him, and thus avoiding Feio.

Danny Rohl holds the key to Djeidi Gassama explosion

Djeidi Gassama has starred for Rangers during their various European campaigns so far this season.

The Frenchman hit four goals from six games during Champions League qualifying, and has since added a further strike during his side’s Europa League campaign.

However, the 22-year-old has found it much harder to have an impact in domestic action so far, although Rohl could hold the key to unlocking him further.

The pair linked up at Sheffield Wednesday across the last two seasons, when Gassama enjoyed the two most productive years of his fledgling career under the German’s guidance.

He will certainly be hoping that the opportunity to work with Rohl once again could see him explode into life in the Premiership and become a key player for Rangers.

The mixed feelings on Rohl from around the Rangers fanbase are understandable, but Gassama is certainly one man who will be delighted to have seen his former boss come in.
