Rangers chiefs blasted for new Rangers hire after Kevin Thelwell admission

Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe don’t seem to be bothered about making daft decisions at Rangers.

Danny Rohl was hired to replace Russell Martin after a drawn-out saga that saw Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat turn down the job.

Kevin Thelwell’s position at Ibrox has been tenuous, with the former Everton chief making some terrible calls regarding the appointment of the former Southampton boss and recruitment in the summer.

The US consortium seem to be fully behind their sporting director at the Glaswegian outfit, but they can’t be turning a blind eye to supporters’ concerns in G51.

Rangers approve Robbie Thelwell appointment despite knowing of potential backlash

It doesn’t look like the Gers’ hierarchy care about the fans’ opinions after going ahead with the appointment of Robbie Thelwell as the new head of recruitment, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist feels the optics of the 26-year-old’s arrival at Ibrox is “catastrophically bad”, and Thelwell senior admitted in the recent press conference that the Light Blues were aware of how handing his son an important role in G51 may look.

Jackson doesn’t feel Robbie is ready for such an influential role in the Glaswegian outfit’s backroom, with his prior experience coming as a scout for Wolves, Aston Villa and Norwich City.

Speaking on Hotline Live on 21 October, the journalist said: “Do you know the crazy thing, and this is the bit that doesn’t make any logical sense to me. [Thelwell] said, ‘I know how bad this looks…’ The optics, they’re worse than horrible, they’re catastrophically bad, and yet somehow in their wisdom they said, We’ll go and have a conversation.'”

Jackson added: “And the guys, the big brains in the room all agreed, ‘Do you know what? We’ll just go for it.’ That’s bad for me because it tells me they really don’t care about it in the eyes of the supporters.

“And that’s not a great place to be in. And I’m sorry, on no basis is a 26-year-old kid with a couple of down the ladder scouting positions under his belt the best qualified man to be head of recruitment at Rangers.”

Andrew Cavenagh digs own grave at Ibrox after what he’s done with Kevin Thelwell

With Robbie’s appointment at Ibrox confirmed, it doesn’t look like Thelwell senior’s position is under any danger despite the Gers’ poor start to the season.

While Rangers fans want the sporting director to be held accountable for their recent woes, it seems Cavenagh and Marathe have a different opinion.

The American owners risk hurting their reputation at the Light Blues if things don’t turn around soon, and there’s already growing sentiment among some supporters that the US consortium are clueless.

Rohl is already on the back foot at Ibrox, with fans wanting either Gerrard or Muscat to fill the vacancy in G51 after Martin’s abysmal record, and it will be interesting to see how the situation now unfolds.
