Andrew Cavenagh sparks ‘alarm and anger’ at Rangers already after ‘jaw-dropping’ latest from Ibrox

Andrew Cavenagh has faced significant criticism at Rangers following a dismal period for the Ibrox club since his arrival.

Rangers hired Danny Rohl on Monday, and Cavenagh was present at the German’s unveiling press conference on Tuesday.

Alongside Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell, the trio were grilled for their parts in the appointment of Russell Martin and the confusing search to replace him.

Rangers sacked Martin at the start of October, and were linked with several managers in the international break that followed.

Just days ago, Rangers looked set to hire Kevin Muscat with Rohl appearing to drop out of the race, but in a last-gasp U-turn, the deal for the Australian collapsed and the German re-entered focus.

Andrew Cavenagh slammed for Rangers developments

The Rangers hierarchy finds itself under increasing pressure by the day, with Rohl’s success an absolute necessity for the likes of Stewart and Thelwell.

The latter has come under particular criticism, with many of his summer signings failing to impress under Martin.

Just weeks ago, Rangers hired Robbie Thelwell to the recruitment team, with his dad clearly playing a part in the appointment.

The 26-year-old has spent time at Norwich and Wolves, but still represented a clearly inexperienced option for what will be a key role for the Gers.

Writing for the Daily Record on Wednesday, Keith Jackson slammed Cavenagh for his involvement in the appointment and other developments in a wretched time right now in Govan.

There is a feeling among many close observers that, having paid top dollar to take over a club which has won just one league title out of the last 14, Cavenagh believed a clear pivot was required,” Jackson wrote.

And who could blame him? But in reality, it’s his complete refusal to acknowledge, own or rectify the other mistakes that have been made which will continue to cause alarm and anger.

He said nothing, for example, when the recent jaw-dropping appointment of Thelwell Jr to the role of head of recruitment was raised.

Kevin Thelwell questioned on controversial appointment

Thelwell’s son may well be capable, but it was a decision that the Rangers’ sporting director surely would have known would attract criticism.

Questioned on the controversy on Tuesday, Thelwell said: “I think it is always uncomfortable to hear.

And optically, I think we all agreed when we made this step to appoint Robbie that it was going to be seen in a particular way.

But the reality of the situation is we want to bring the very best talent here to Rangers Football Club.

I was extremely transparent about that was what Dan wanted to do, and I think Robbie probably went through a more rigorous process than probably anybody else that is employed by this football club, truth be known,” Thelwell added.

It would have to end up spectacular to not finish in despair again.
