Rangers set to make official announcement on new manager hire after shock Danny Rohl twist

Rangers are reportedly on the verge of announcing Danny Rohl as their new manager.

Rohl, 36, has been out of work since leaving crisis club Sheffield Wednesday in the summer and is now poised to become the 21st permanent manager of the Ibrox club.

Rangers have failed to hire both Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat since Russell Martin was sacked over two weeks ago, just 122 days into his reign in charge.

Rohl had also walked away from talks with Rangers last week when it seemed as though the job was going to Shanghai Port’s Muscat once the Chinese Super League season ended.

Danny Rohl’s U-turn could see him announced as new Rangers manager very soon

After failing to hire former Rangers defender Muscat as Martin’s successor, the Ibrox giants reopened discussions with Rohl.

According to the Scottish Sun, chairman Andrew Cavenagh held talks with Rohl in London last week.

The German is now back in contention, and it is understood that an official announcement is “imminent”.

Rohl could take charge of his first Rangers game against Brann on Thursday when the Gers head to Norway for their third league-phase game in the Europa League.

If he only makes the stands for that game, his first match should be against Kilmarnock at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

What Billy Dodds has heard about Danny Rohl as Rangers edge closer to deal

Rohl’s arrival is no doubt going to cause a lot of criticism from Rangers fans.

It’s hardly Rohl’s fault, which some supporters will need reminding of, but the whole process has been so botched and for Cavenagh to go back to the man who turned him down last week is quite pathetic.

What fans are worried most about Rohl is that he’s lacking in experience, something which many thought Martin did, even though he’d managed a lot more games and at a much higher level than Rohl, who’s only ever job was at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

Billy Dodds has that fear.

“Most wanted Steven Gerrard, but that’s gone now,” Dodds told BBC Sportsound.

“I just think if you go down that Championship route again – I am not saying Danny Rohl is not a good manager. I’ve heard he is.

“But it is kind of rinse and repeat and I don’t think the Rangers fans want that.

“It’s huge that the hierarchy at Rangers take the fans into account on this.”
