Mohamed Diomande and Rangers regular: The first three players Danny Rohl could sell after appointment

Rangers have confirmed the appointment of Danny Rohl after a two-week process that has seen several candidates come and go.

Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers just before the international break, and decision-makers at Ibrox hoped to have had a replacement in place before the visit of Dundee United.

But the saga has not panned out as smoothly as imagined, with a number of candidates dropping out of the race at various stages.

Rangers initially looked to hire Steven Gerrard, before looking set to welcome Kevin Muscat, but both moves collapsed after talks with the Ibrox hierarchy.

With Rohl now in place, Ibrox News suggests the first three players that the German will sell.

Mohamed Diomande could be off

Mohamed Diomande has been terrible for Rangers this season so far, despite enjoying a strong last campaign.

The midfielder was absent against Dundee United through injury, but has contributed to little during his time on the pitch.

He was sent off in the Europa League against Genk, and gave a penalty away in the loss to Hearts at Ibrox.

The 23-year-old has won an appalling 16.7 per cent of his aerial duals across his six Scottish Premiership appearances, and has completed just 22.2 per cent of his long balls.

Considering his age, Diomande presents one of the few players Rohl could sacrifice for at least a considerable fee.

Joe Rothwell’s Rangers spell hasn’t got going

Rangers signed Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth in the summer, but the midfielder has failed to adapt to the Scottish game.

Often appearing anonymous in the midfield, the 30-year-old has consistently failed to make an impression in his brief time at the club so far.

Rothwell had impressed at Leeds United in the Championship last season, but appears to have vastly underestimated the quality of the Scottish Premiership.

Given the interest that Rangers fended off to sign the Englishman in the summer, it should not be a difficult task to find a willing buyer to end the midfielder’s woeful time up north.

Jack Butland could fall victim to Danny Rohl appointment

A modern-style coach himself, Rohl has often favoured a modern-style goalkeeper at the base of his team.

The German most often selected James Beadle, 21, during his time at Sheffield Wednesday, and oversaw the introduction of Pierce Charles.

Rangers were linked to Charles in the summer, the 20-year-old offering superb quality on the ball to go with his quick reflexes.

Jack Butland is many things, but the goalkeeper is not a natural with the ball at his feet and has made several mistakes with it in recent years.

The former Crystal Palace man’s position in the team will not be of the utmost important to Rohl, but if the German is looking to shake things up, Butland may be a necessary casualty.
