Steven Gerrard still plots United Kingdom return despite Rangers job developments
Steven Gerrard failed to become the new Rangers manager following the sacking of Russell Martin.
Gerrard held talks with Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe to discuss the possibility of him returning to Ibrox.
However, Rangers’ talks with Gerrard broke down on 11 October, as he alluded to the fact that the time wasn’t right to return to Govan.
Kevin Muscat is now the favourite for the Rangers job, whilst Gerrard’s managerial future is yet to be decided after his stint in Asia.

Gerrard will return to the UK in the next few months
Gerrard was a fan-favourite at Rangers, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020-21 to prevent Celtic from winning ten titles in a row.
The Liverpool legend moved on from Rangers to manage Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, yet after unsuccessful spells at both, he has been without a job since January.
Alan Nixon has reported via his Patreon that Gerrard is planning to return from his Bahrain base to move back to Merseyside shortly.
Steven Gerrard’s managerial career:
- Rangers (2018-2021)
- Aston Villa (2021-2022)
- Al-Ettifaq (2023-2025)
Despite the tax issues he will face when he returns to the UK, he is planning to move back due to family reasons.
Gerrard was successful to an extent in Glasgow, yet he faced scrutiny for not being able to win any of the domestic cup competitions in over three years in charge.
His success as manager has been limited ever since, and whilst he would have been warmly welcomed back at Rangers, it seems that he may never get that chance again.

Russell Martin’s disastrous tenure at G51 has left Cavenagh needing to get this next decision correct, as Muscat could be announced at any moment.
Rangers job may never be on the cards again for Steven Gerrard
Muscat is expected to be a success at Rangers, given his record of winning titles at multiple different clubs all around the world.
If Gerrard remains out of management for a while, by the time Muscat finally moves on from Rangers, which is obviously unknown at this point, the Liverpudlian may not have the reputation to be considered in the future.
The 45-year-old has made it abundantly clear that this wasn’t the right time for him to have a second spell in Glasgow.
However, after passing up on the opportunity, Gerrard may never be able to add to his legacy as a Rangers manager.
