Scott Allan reveals what he is sure about after ‘huge’ Rangers manager news around Kevin Muscat

Kevin Muscat appears certain to be appointed as the new manager of Rangers in the near future.

Russell Martin was sacked after a dismal tenure at Ibrox and, after a rollercoaster few weeks, Muscat is the front-runner to become manager at Rangers.

Steven Gerrard had previously been tipped to return to Rangers but talks broke down and it now appears Muscat will join when he has finished the Chinese Super League season with Chinese Port.

Rangers drew 2-2 with Dundee United at Ibrox on Saturday, a result that leaves them sixth in the Scottish Premiership standings through eight games.

But former Celtic midfielder and BBC Sport pundit Scott Allan thinks Rangers will make big improvements in two areas ahead of what he thinks will be a “huge” appointment by the Light Blues.

Scott Allan backs Rangers to find attacking spark under Kevin Muscat

There is no doubting that Rangers need a spark to reinvigorate their campaign after the disaster that Martin oversaw during his short spell in charge.

Allan, in quotes reported in the print edition of the Daily Record on Sunday, is sure that Rangers will improve both in attack and shore up in defence under Muscat.

He said: “This is a huge appointment, I do think there are good players there.

“So, a new manager reinvigorating the squad, with a clear message in terms of how they’ll play, I’m sure could get better performances.

“The most important thing is getting your best players where they can hurt the opposition. It’s the fundamentals of football.

“It’s hard to be critical of any Rangers striker because they aren’t getting anywhere near enough chances. Rangers are also losing far too many goals, giving up too many chances, too many shots on their goal. That would be the job for any manager to try to make that better.

“Ultimately, when you’re not doing well in both boxes it ends up in the results that you’re seeing. When you’re not defending well, and you’re not creating chances, there’s a clear problem.”

When will Kevin Muscat take charge of Rangers?

While no official announcement has been made by Rangers on Martin’s successor, Muscat is now the overwhelming favourite to take the reins at Ibrox.

As things stand, it looks likely Muscat will complete the CSL season with Shanghai Port, with the final day of the domestic campaign taking place on November 22.

While it will be a frustration not to have him in before then, if the hierarchy are convinced that Muscat – who enjoyed a one-season spell at Ibrox during his playing career – is the right man to take charge then it makes sense to wait to get their man.

With Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises getting their first managerial appointment so badly wrong, they need to be absolutely convinced that their next one is spot on.

So, if that means waiting a few weeks for Muscat to arrive then so be it. But in the meantime, there just simply has to be a huge upturn in results to get dissenting supporters back on side.
