Billy Dodds gets defensive after question over Rangers backroom role under Kevin Muscat

Rangers may bring the band back together as Neil McCann is expected to follow Kevin Muscat as assistant manager.

Steven Smith oversaw the Dundee United result on 18 October, with James Tavernier’s 87th-minute strike securing a 2-2 draw for the Gers at home in the William Hill Premiership.

Muscat is the leading candidate to become the next manager at Ibrox, but Neil McCann may have to take interim charge as the Shanghai Port head coach wants to finish the Chinese Super League season, which ends on 22 November.

With Bill Dodds previously serving as Barry Ferguson’s assistant last season, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to see him in the dugout once again.

Billy Dodds not in mix for new Rangers backroom staff

Dodds has dismissed suggestions that he is going to be part of the Gers’ coaching setup under the new manager.

While the former Scotland striker has admitted to having a good relationship with McCann, and was teammates with Muscat at Ibrox, he may not be in the mix to return to G51 anytime soon.

Dodds revealed he hasn’t spoken to the Shanghai Port head coach in years, but it remains to be seen whether a call between the two will happen in the coming weeks.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on 18 October, the Scotsman said: “People put two and two together because McCann is my friend, and I played with Muscat. I’ve not spoken to Muscat for about 20 years.”

Dodds added: “And Neil, yeah, I had a game of golf with him at the start of the week, which was organised after the Scotland game, but I haven’t spoken to him since. That’s the truth. I don’t know what people want me to say.”

Muscat’s arrival at Ibrox can’t come soon enough, with the Glaswegian outfit continuing to drop points in the league.

The Shanghai Port boss is currently assisted by Vincenzo Ierardo and Ross Aloisi in China, with Ian Walker as the goalkeeping coach.

Ierardo and Aloisi could join Muscat at Ibrox, with McCann also part of the backroom staff at the Gers.

Rangers could also have Shanghai Port’s head of performance Les Giles follow the Australian manager to Govan, but only time will tell how things will unfold.

The Light Blues need the managerial situation in G51 to be resolved quickly as they have some crunch ties against Brann, Celtic and Roma coming up.

Hopefully, the Glaswegian outfit can convince Muscat and Shanghai Port to part ways earlier than expected, as things are only going to get sour at Ibrox.
