Rangers reveal could make Kevin Muscat walk away as main differences emerge already

Rangers crashed to yet another disappointing draw at Ibrox against Dundee United on Saturday.

James Tavernier rescued a late 2-2 draw for Rangers, despite Thelo Aasgaard opening the scoring with Steven Smith in temporary charge of his first game.

With Russell Martin sacked two weeks ago, Steven Gerrard looked set to take over but backed out, leaving an agonising wait in Govan.

Kevin Muscat now looks set to take over at Rangers, but he won’t be happy with what he saw on 18 October, as he likely watches on from China.

Kevin Muscat watches on as Rangers draw vs Dundee United

When Aasgaard opened the scoring, Rangers fans audibly let out a sigh of relief.

Things quickly changed around, though, with Kristijan Trapanovski and Craig Sibbald turning the game on its head, with the second an unbelievable strike.

Tavernier thankfully rescued his side, but the Rangers captain failed in talks with the Union Bears following the draw.

Looking at the stats via Sofascore, Rangers dominated the ball again.

Making 320 more passes than the away side, it counted for nothing as the Bears had 29 shots but failed to register a single big chance on goal.

With seven corner kicks leading to zero success either, Muscat will not be happy.

Shanghai Port electric under Kevin Muscat

Yes, Muscat’s side concede a lot of goals in the Chinese Super League.

Having said that, they are electric in front of goal, something that Rangers haven’t been for years, no matter who the manager has been.

In Friday’s 4-3 win over Qingdao, Shanghai Port only had 16 shots, but created six big chances and actually had less of the ball, completing 38 fewer passes.

Could Kevin Muscat walk away?

Muscat will be far from happy watching Rangers, and given he wouldn’t officially start until 22 November, he could easily back out of talks.

The Australian would take charge of a squad of players that are the complete opposite of his Shanghai Port squad, and that isn’t a great look.

These Rangers players are drilled to keep the ball, even in pointless situations, and that is harming them on the transition and going into the final third, while also putting them into positions to concede more.

Muscat wants quick players, on and off the ball, and he simply will not get that at Rangers.

Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers need to act now or face losing yet another top manager target.
