Rangers figure questioned over ‘ridiculous’ Ibrox hire that reflects badly on club
Rangers have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently, from their on-field struggles under Russell Martin to the shabby managerial search.
The Gers seem to have finally found a replacement for Martin in Kevin Muscat, but that comes with its own weird nuances.
With the Shanghai Pot manager eager to finish the Chinese Super League season that ends on 22 November, the Light Blues may have to wait for his arrival in G51.
Steven Smith has been given interim charge at Ibrox for now, and while the time it will take to appoint the Australian manager isn’t ideal, it’s better to have the right man than someone not fit for purpose.

Kevin Thelwell slammed for Robbie Thelwell appointment at Rangers
Robbie Thelwell’s appointment as the Gers’ head of recruitment is not a good look for Kevin Thelwell, Derek Ferguson says.
The former Scottish midfielder believes the timing of the sporting director bringing his son to G51 is all wrong, as things haven’t been great this season.
Thelwell is facing the heat from the Ibrox faithful after what was arguably some poor recruitment in the summer, and he’s only made things worse for himself.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “That was ridiculous. When you’re under pressure and things aren’t going well, you can’t just go and bring in a family member.”
Ferguson added: “It’s not a good look at all. It’s okay when everything is going great and you can do what you want. But when it’s not, and you bring in a family member, well, it’s no wonder he’s the but of many jokes up here. It wasn’t a clever move, and the timing was really bad. Thelwell is rightly under pressure.”
At the end of the day, the responsibility for taking care of the Glaswegian outfit lies on Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe, and they’re to blame for things turning sour in G51 as much as Thelwell.
Kevin Thelwell to be next one out at Ibrox
While Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are backing Thelwell right now, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them part ways with him soon.
Rangers backed Martin behind the scenes for several weeks before eventually being forced to pull the plug on his tenure at Ibrox.
Players | Transfer fee |
Youssef Chermiti | £8million |
Oliver Antman | £3.5m |
Thelo Aasgaard | £3.5m |
Bojan Miovski | £2.6m |
Emmanuel Fernandez | £2.5m |
The Gers had an approximate net spend of £20million in the summer, but there’s nothing to show for it, with most of the 12 players Thelwell signed underwhelming.
If things continue to go south in G51, it wouldn’t be surprising to see other members of the board on the chopping block.
