Kevin Muscat to sign Rangers’ very own Kyogo Furuhashi as appointment approved
Kevin Muscat will hope Kevin Thelwell doesn’t stand in his way as Rangers look set to finalise their new managerial appointment.
Steven Gerrard looked to be the frontrunner to replace Russell Martin, but after the Liverpool icon’s snub, most Gers fans will prefer the Shanghai Port manager’s arrival in G51.
Muscat’s official unveiling may have to wait at Ibrox, with the Australian manager looking to complete the Chinese Super League season, which runs until 22 November.
With the Glaswegian outfit struggling at the start of this season, the former defender will surely want reinforcements in the winter transfer window and may pull off some mega moves.

Rangers to get Ange Postecoglou-like transfers under Kevin Muscat
Muscat knows former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou very well, having worked as his assistant at Melbourne Victory.
The former Gers defender took over the A-League outfit’s first team after the Australian national team appointed Postecoglou.
Muscat also succeeded the Nottingham Forest boss at Yokohama F. Marinos, with the Europa League-winning head coach leaving for the Hoops.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see the 52-year-old boss exploiting the same markets that Postecoglou did, and speaking on Open Goal on 16 October, Si Ferry said: “I think he gets that market, what Postecoglou brought, doesn’t he? There are markets that he can go exploit with the transfers as well. I think Muscat would be a good appointment.”
Muscat’s aggressive style of play at Shanghai Port is something the Ibrox faithful are looking forward to in G51, but who he targets in the transfer windows will also be interesting.
Postecoglou signed Kyogo Furuhashi at Celtic in 2021, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Shanghai Port manager use his connections and pull off similar deals at the Gers.
Kyogo Furuhashi success at Celtic enviable
Thelwell is under extreme pressure at Ibrox, with arguably Djeidi Gassama the only one of the 12 players he signed at the Light Blues in the summer living up to expectations.
Rangers have suffered at the hands of Furuhashi in recent years, with the Japan international consistently finding the back of the net at Parkhead.
Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Kyogo Furuhashi | 165 | 85 | 19 |
The 30-year-old won four Scottish league titles at the Hoops before leaving for Stade Rennais in January 2025.
If the Gers can sign someone like Furuhashi under Muscat, it would certainly be game-changing at Ibrox.
