Troy Deeney concerned about Rangers owners amid next manager latest

Rangers are still on the hunt for a new manager as the international break comes to a close.

Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers on 5 October, yet the international break has seen a host of managerial candidates linked with the vacancy.

With Andrew Cavenagh facing a lot of pressure to get this managerial appointment correct, a lot of criticism has been lobbed at Kevin Thelwell for his role in the proceedings.

Troy Deeney has spoken out against the Rangers board over their lack of authority in appointing a new man in charge.

Kevin Thelwell under serious pressure at Rangers

Kevin Muscat is set to become the Rangers manager as talks over compensation for his services continue to rumble on.

The long-winded saga has seen a host of managers interested in taking over at Ibrox, yet the board have consistently chopped and changed over who they want to walk through the door.

As Rangers face Dundee United on Saturday, there is still uncertainty in G51 over who will be the next man in charge.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 17 October, Deeney expressed his worry over the Rangers board’s lack of decisiveness throughout the process.

He said: “My concern is with the ownership because the names that are being linked with Rangers job are completely different profiles. Rohl is different to Gerrard, Gerrard is different to Muscat.

Thelwell is rightfully under intense scrutiny, with his lucrative spending in the market on unproven players backfiring against him during Martin’s reign.

Both men have a precarious standing with the Rangers supporters due to their continued backing of Martin, and Thelwell’s decision to hire his son as the head of recruitment has massively backfired.

The sporting director faces a battle to stay on the right side of Light Blues fans, and he is currently losing it, rather spectacularly.

Rangers fans are excited about the prospect of Muscat joining, yet it’s taken an awfully long time for the board to narrow down their list of candidates.

If Muscat does join Rangers, he would not move to Glasgow until late November, as he is on the brink of success in China.

Kevin Muscat can light a spark in the Rangers players

The 52-year-old is three games away from winning his second successive Chinese Super League title with Shanghai Port.

A proven winner at multiple different clubs, Muscat could have a real influence on a team that looks devoid of confidence.

Deeney said: “Going with a manager who’s just won the league, he’ll have high standards. Muscat will have an authority when walking in as he’s just won something.”

This is something Martin clearly lacked, yet Muscat’s fiery nature could inject some belief into the under-performing players.

The former Gers defender knows exactly what it takes to be successful at Rangers, and if he enjoys a positive start in Govan, then the weight of pressure will slowly start to life off of Thelwell’s shoulders.
