Rangers players will be terrified after what Peter Crouch revealed about Kevin Muscat

Kevin Muscat looks set to take over at Rangers, with the Gers to finally appoint a successor to Russell Martin.

Rangers sacked Martin before the international break, after a draw to Falkirk had compounded a terrible start to the season.

The Gers had won just one of their opening seven Scottish Premiership games under the former Southampton boss, and currently sit 11 points behind leaders Hearts.

Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl both turned down the Rangers job, but decision-makers at Ibrox have moved quickly to line up a deal for their, now, ideal choice.

Rangers are seeking UEFA dispensation to hire Muscat, with the deal now looking to be in the final stages.

Peter Crouch was scared by Kevin Muscat

Muscat helped Rangers to the domestic treble as a player, but the defender would only spend one season at Ibrox during his career.

Much of the 52-year-old’s playing days were spent in England, in stints with Crystal Palace, Wolves and Millwall.

Earning a reputation for being a hard-tackling, aggressive defender, Muscat received 123 yellow cards and 12 red cards across his career.

None were much worse than the Australian’s 2011 tackle on Melbourne Heart player Adrian Zahra, which drew criticism throughout Australia.

Muscat received a straight red card for the tackle, which had been incredibly high and nowhere near the ball, and was subsequently banned for eight matches.

Peter Crouch confirmed the feeling towards the defender in his podcast last year. “Kevin Muscat scared me,” the former Premier League striker said on That Peter Crouch Podcast.

You know people would say ‘I’m going to break your legs’ – when he would say it, you genuinely believed him.

Joleon Lescott had different experience of Muscat

In a 2013 interview with FourFourTwo, former Manchester City and Wolves defender Joleon Lescott painted a slightly different picture of Muscat.

“Very, very good leader,” the former England international said. “His passion and his professionalism and the way he conducted himself around the training ground.

Musky was one of those personalities we needed around the club and team and he was a consistent performer on the park.”

The Rangers squad may well be scared of the volatile treatment they can expect of Muscat when he arrives, but the Australian is clearly multifaceted.

The type of manager who can give you the hairdryer treatment for misplacing a pass, but put his arm around you the next minute, is perhaps exactly who Rangers need.
