Jamie O’Hara shares surprise Ally McCoist claim as Rangers ready for Kevin Muscat

Kevin Muscat is set to finally end the managerial saga at Rangers, with the Shanghai Port boss the favourite to replace Russell Martin.

Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe have overseen what has been a drawn-out process in G51 to appoint the Gers’ new head coach, but it looks like they finally have their preferred candidate.

Ally McCoist wasn’t surprised to see Martin get sacked, nor were the Light Blues’ fans, who had been calling for his dismissal for a while.

Muscat’s arrival at Ibrox could be delayed, with the Chinese Super League season ending on 22 November, and the Glaswegian outfit have now been suggested to go for someone else instead.

Ally McCoist pitched as next Rangers manager

Jamie O’Hara wants to see McCoist being given another opportunity to manage the Gers.

The talkSPORT pundit feels the Light Blues’ all-time leading goalcorer, who’s an icon at Ibrox, will be able to turn things around and change the atmosphere in G51.

While McCoist is currently one of the biggest names in sports broadcasting, his only first-team managerial stint came at the Glaswegian outfit between 2011 and 2014 after serving as Walter Smith’s assistant.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 17 October, O’Hara said: “Can we get Ally McCoist in there or what? I know [he’s had his chance], but he’s big in the game now. He’s flying. Get McCoist in there and sort it out. Get the players onside.”

Steven Gerrard initially looked set to return to Ibrox, but the ex-England international ended up rejecting the opportunity.

While Muscat is in pole position to fill the Gers’ vacancy, it remains to be seen whether there will be any snags in the coming days regarding the appointment.

Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe risk writing off season at Ibrox

Steven Smith will take interim charge against Dundee United on 18 October, but it will be interesting to see who will be in the dugout after that.

Neill McCann is tipped to return to Rangers as Muscat’s assistant and may be handed the reins temporarily until Shanghai Port’s season ends.

The Gers risk doing further damage without a permanent head coach in place, as they have some crunch fixtures against Brann, Celtic and Roma coming up before the Chinese Super League ends.

There have been several twists and turns in the managerial saga at Ibrox, and only time will tell how it will conclude.
