Rangers fans will love what Alex McLeish noticed about Kevin Muscat behind the scenes at Ibrox
Rangers are inching closer to a managerial appointment, with Kevin Muscat appearing to be the man to take the Ibrox club forward.
Muscat is close to joining Rangers, which would see him leave his current side Shanghai Port in China.
There are still financial obstacles in Muscat’s move to Rangers, but it seems like both parties are hopeful of tying up a deal soon.
The news comes after Steven Gerrard’s move to Rangers collapsed ahead of what would’ve been a sensational return to Ibrox.
Muscat has already had the seal of approval from some, and former Rangers manager Alex McLeish has also weighed in on the Australian that he used to manage.

Ex-Rangers manager Alex McLeish hails Kevin Muscat’s personality
Russell Martin was slammed by the media and fans for his attitude and approach to managing Rangers, but it seems like this will most certainly not be the case with Muscat.
McLeish’s previous comments, while speaking to the Glasgow Times in October 2023, show that he hasn’t just backed Muscat out of loyalty, he genuinely values his qualities as a manager.
“[Muscat] was a good character about the dressing room. He let his voice be known and that’s possibly where you could see him moving into management and coaching in future,” McLeish said.
“He was a captain-type person in the dressing room and I’ve nothing but good things to say about Kevin.
- Muscat has won two league titles at Shanghai Port
- He won two league titles while managing Australian side Melbourne Victory
- Muscat also won a league trophy in Japan when managing Yokohama F. Marinos
“Of course [there were times when you had to rein in his temper]. You have to manage your anger levels and not react at a club like Rangers. But he was a big rough Aussie, that was the type of character he was.”

With Rangers finding themselves in unusual territory in the Scottish Premiership, Muscat could be the perfect man to fire the squad up in an ambitious push for success this season.

Muscat’s character may be exactly what Rangers need right now
The Rangers squad are deflated right now and need a massive lift, as do Gers fans.
Rangers have experienced arguably one of the worst tenures in the club’s long history under Martin, as Andrew Cavenagh should have axed him a while ago.
However, with Muscat looking likely to arrive at Ibrox, all hope cannot be lost yet, as his characteristics could be exactly what Rangers crave right now.
He won’t mess around. Muscat will come straight in and lay down the law on what he wants to achieve as manager, and that will only be success.
