Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson sent message by Simon Jordan as Rangers close in on new manager

Rangers are still on the hunt for a new manager ahead of their match against Dundee United on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard declined a return to Ibrox after holding talks with Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe.

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl also withdrew his name from the Rangers job, with one candidate now becoming the favourite to take charge in Govan.

As the saga rumbles on, Simon Jordan sent a clear message to Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson on what they must do in the coming days.

Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson urged to hire Kevin Muscat immediately

Kevin Muscat is holding advanced talks with Rangers to become their new manager, although it is expected that he won’t move to Ibrox until late November due to his current commitments with Shanghai Port.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 16 October, Jordan told Thelwell and Steinsson what they must do next.

He said: “It would appear to me that Muscat is the direction of travel they want go in, then move on and get it done.

“Thelwell, Steinsson, everyone who is involved in the decision-making process; get Muscat down.”

Muscat’s managerial record

The former Rangers defender is on course to win a second successive league title with Shanghai Port, with the season finishing on 22 November.

Neil McCann could join on an interim basis until then, and whilst Rangers would have to pay Shanghai a compensation fee of £1.5million, the board must take action as a busy schedule lies ahead.

Russell Martin’s was completely unqualified to be given the Rangers job in the first place, and Muscat has proved that he can win trophies at different clubs that he’s managed.

This is a decision that Rangers can’t afford to get wrong, and if matters don’t improve under Muscat, Thelwell’s role on the board would be far from secure.

Kevin Thelwell could be next Rangers figurehead to leave

Thelwell has been under immense scrutiny due to his reckless spending in the transfer market on unproven players.

The fees paid for Youssef Chermiti and Emmanuel Fernandez were astronomical, and Bears fans have voiced their displeasure at his work at G51.

Hiring his son, Robbie Thelwell, as the new head of recruitment sparked even more fury from supporters.

Whilst Thelwell won’t have the final say on who is the next manager, he bears a huge responsibility on the decision-making process at Rangers, and his position at the club is certainly far from safe.
