David Tanner unsure if Rangers pair can survive sack after new manager farce

Rangers are facing uncertain times in their mission to hire a new manager.

The hunt continues for a new head coach after Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers after a terrible start to the campaign at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard looked to be the man for Rangers as a return to Govan appeared to be on the cards for the Englishman.

A deal ultimately fell through as Gerrard decided to turn Rangers down, leaving Andrew Cavenagh and Co. with egg on their face.

The process continues to drag on for the Light Blues, leaving David Tanner hesitant about the future of certain senior figures in G51.

David Tanner uncertain of Kevin Thelwell future at Rangers

It looks as if Kevin Muscat will come in as Rangers boss once his time at Shanghai Port has come to an end in November.

This will leave the Gers in need of an interim manager for upcoming fixtures, putting them back to square one once again.

Barry Ferguson came in to see out last season, and it appears that Neil McCann will take up the role this time around.

Given the search has now spanned 11 days, the Ibrox faithful are far from impressed and have continued to question Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart.

Speaking via talkSPORT on 16 October, broadcaster Tanner has shared his belief that the duo may not last at Ibrox after this failed managerial hunt – although the new hire could buy them time.

He said: “Something’s got to give, but I’d imagine it’ll be the appointment of a new manager – that’ll buy them a bit of time. There’s a growing discontent from the supporters.

I don’t know if they can come back from this. You wouldn’t wish this on anyone, but it’s life and it’s football.

Thelwell and Patrick Stewart can’t continue at Rangers

Martin’s hire seemed strange at the time, considering how poorly he performed with Southampton in the Premier League last season.

He showed a blind arrogance in his style of play, which didn’t work in England’s top tier and certainly didn’t work in the Scottish Premiership.

The blame for this has to rest with Thelwell and Stewart, especially after what was a busy summer full of strange transfer business.

Rangers summer signings:

It is unclear how many of these additions actually make the Gers better, especially with the Govan club sitting eighth in the table with no manager.

The Ibrox hierarchy has questions to answer on this, and it seems likely that changes could occur early in Cavenagh’s and the 49ers’ reign in charge.
