Steven Gerrard update emerges after Rangers bombshell out of nowhere

Steven Gerrard is once again being linked with the vacant managerial position at Rangers despite previously discounting himself from the running.

The Liverpudlian is held in extremely high regard at Ibrox after he delivered the Gers their 55th Premiership title back in 2021, and notably prevented Celtic from notching their tenth consecutive league triumph.

Talks between Gerrard and Rangers broke down in dramatic fashion on Saturday, with the 45-year-old deciding that it was not the right time to return to Govan, even though discussions with the board were thought to have been progressing well.

However, he has seemingly now returned to the frame out of nowhere, with links growing stronger over a potential return once again on Wednesday.

There have been no fresh talks between Rangers and Steven Gerrard

Gerrard’s decision to distance himself from the Rangers job has disappointed the fanbase, many of whom had their hearts set on a sensational reunion with their former hero.

The emergence of the crazy links on Wednesday will have been enough to have fans dreaming once again, but it has now become clear that there is no substance behind those links, for now at least.

Sky Sports note that the timing was the main issue behind Gerrard’s decision at the weekend, and they also understand that there are no fresh talks that are due to take place between him and the club.

Kevin Muscat and Danny Rohl have both held talks with the hierarchy and impressed in the process, with the former now emerging as the obvious frontrunner.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also had discussions with the Gers, but it is currently unclear whether he is likely to be among the final candidates.

Meanwhile, the duo of Graham Potter and Gary O’Neil were both sounded out earlier in the search, but neither are now being viewed as a potential option.

Kevin Muscat is the best alternative to Steven Gerrard

The attraction towards a return to Rangers for Gerrard was clear to see from the supporters’ perspective.

The fans are crying out for somebody who is a likeable character and will attempt to create a relationship with them, after the disastrous reign of Russell Martin quickly instilled division between them and the team.

Their former title-winning boss was understandably the first choice, but now that he is off the table as an option, Muscat is surely the next best candidate.

The Australian was part of the Rangers squad that won a domestic treble in 2002-03, and knows exactly what is expected of the club and the fans.

His counterpart Rohl is undoubtedly a brilliant young coach, but the parallels with Martin should be far too concerning for all involved.

With that in mind, it is surely right that Muscat is the preferred option at this stage of the search.
