Rangers start to form brand new manager plan as Kevin Muscat developments emerge

Rangers appear no closer to appointing their next permanent manager.

Kevin Muscat appears to be the frontrunner to take over at Ibrox now, after Russell Martin was finally sacked by Rangers on 5 October.

After Steven Gerrard rejected a return to Glasgow, Danny Rohl looked set for a free run at the job.

Things have now changed, though, and former Ibrox star Muscat is in pole position, despite the season in China not ending until late November.

Steven Smith is currently in interim charge of training at Auchenhowie, with plans now seemingly coming together ahead of the return to action.

Rangers manager latest with Kevin Muscat

Muscat is currently in charge of Shanghai Port, who are top of the league in China with four games to go.

Should the Australian need all of those games to win the title again, he wouldn’t be available until 22 November to make the switch to Glasgow.

That is where Neil McCann could come in.

The former Rangers coach appears to be earmarked as Muscat’s assistant already, should he be successful, and he could take charge while he finishes in China.

The Scottish Daily Mail has reported in its print edition that plans are now being formalised for the Dundee United showdown on 18 October, with an interim team likely.

Kevin Muscat would end Rangers nonsense

For too long now, Rangers have been a soft touch.

Since Gerrard left the first time around, Michael Beale, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Philippe Clement and Martin have all failed at Ibrox.

Barry Ferguson did bring back some steel in his interim spell in charge, winning at Parkhead, but the long-term plan didn’t make sense to have him in charge.

Muscat has been there and done it, tasting success in China, Japan and Australia.

More importantly, he knows what it takes to bring a relentless winning attitude to Govan again, having won fans over with his no-nonsense style during his time there.

The best-case scenario would be for Shanghai Port to win the league title with time to spare, opening the door for Muscat to return to Ibrox early.

Either way, as time ticks, it looks more likely that Smith and his team will be in charge against Dundee United on Saturday.
