Darrell Currie hits out as ‘nonsense’ Rangers claim made live on air

Rangers are the club of discussion on most media channels at the moment

Rangers’ decision to sack Russell Martin and their subsequent search for a replacement have taken the headlines all over the place.

Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises group, the Gers’ majority owners, have a huge decision to make and increased scrutiny as they do so.

However, it has also led to some wild claims about the Ibrox giants, which have now been addressed by a prominent broadcaster.

Darnell Currie calls out Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent for Rangers and Celtic rant

Rangers’ search for a new manager has led to some ridiculous statements, and another one was made live on talkSPORT on 14 October.

Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent discussed Scottish football, and they came to some damning conclusions.

Goldstein said: “You say they’re giants, in history they are. If you’re a decent player in Europe, they’re last.”

Bent agreed with him, saying: “They days when it was Ally [McCoist] and them boys, and a little later with Gazza, Henrik Larsson, Nakamura, these type of players, I get that right, but it is a difficult one now, because Celtic are ahead of where Rangers are.

“I’m looking at the Championship now, and I’m thinking if you are a team that has a chance of getting promoted, you are not leaving to go to Celtic or Rangers.”

Scottish football broadcaster Darrell Currie has fired back at the claims, labelling them as nonsense, and calling it a slow news day.

Taking to X on 15 October, he said: “Attention seeking of the highest level. Let’s be controversial to stir the pot.

“Don’t fall for this nonsense…. Same old boring [expletive] that emerges every few years. Must be a quiet news day.”

Rangers and Celtic are better than the Championship

Bent and Goldstein should know better, as should Simon Jordan, another talkSPORT host who regularly compares Scottish football to the English second tier.

That is simply not accurate, for starters, the level of football is higher at the top between the two largest clubs in the division, while the rest are also competitive.

Secondly, there is European football involved, especially in Celtic and Rangers’ cases, and the Gers have consistently shone in Europe in the last few years, in particular in the second-rate competition.

They reached the 2022 Europa League final under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and made it to the quarter-finals of the same competition in Barry Ferguson’s temporary reign last season, so clearly, they are better than Championship sides.

The finances involved with the biggest Scottish clubs also increase their status, in terms of the comparison to second-tier sides, as the Gers spent approximately £20million this summer.

Currie is right to call it out, as it is a ridiculous narrative and needs to be stopped, as it is simply not correct, and it belittles the Scottish game.
