Rangers could now appoint interim manager after drama at Ibrox – Here’s who it could be

Steven Gerrard has left Rangers with a massive hole to fill ahead of facing Dundee United on Saturday.

The Gers wanted to bring the Liverpool icon back to G51, but he turned down the opportunity after talks with Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe.

It seems Gerrard wasn’t entirely convinced during the interview process for the Ibrox vacancy, leaving the Light Blues to decide on the next best option.

Danny Rohl has now been heavily linked as Russell Martin’s replacement, but the prospect of an interim head coach seems to also be on the cards.

Slaven Bilic a candidate for Rangers as possibility of an interim manager raised

Alex Crook wonders whether the ongoing search at the Gers for a new manager could potentially result in a temporary appointment.

The talkSPORT journalist revealed that Slaven Bilic, 57, is someone whose name has been put forward to fill the Ibrox vacancy.

With the Light Blues scheduled to host Dundee United in the William Hill Premiership on 18 October, it remains to be seen how the situation in G51 unfolds.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 14 October, Crook said: “Does that bring into play a possible interim manager? Slaven Bilic is someone else who I know has been put forward to the Rangers board.”

Kevin Muscat is another name suggested at Ibrox, but the Glaswegian outfit may need to pay Shanghai Port a significant compensation fee.

Given Martin’s tenure ended in such a massive disaster, the American owners will likely want to avoid making a similar mistake with their next hire, and it makes sense for them to take their time with it.

Steven Smith to lead at Ibrox vs Dundee United

Steven Smith is taking training at Ibrox, and the Gers’ Under-19s coach is best placed to lead them on an interim basis right now.

Bilic did great at West Ham United between 2015 and 2017, but his recent record isn’t the most encouraging.

Bilic’s record at Al-Fateh

The Croatian manager’s last three jobs have been at Beijing Guoan, Watford and most recently, Al-Fateh in Saudi Arabia.

It wouldn’t make sense to appoint someone like Bilic temporarily, as there’s still a long way to go in the season.
