Kevin Muscat backroom staff appointments mooted already as Rangers close in on new hire
Rangers are edging closer to the appointment of Kevin Muscat.
Steven Gerrard had looked destined for a Rangers return after talks went well with Andrew Cavenagh over the vacant role at Ibrox.
Talks fell through at the final hour as Gerrard turned down a move to Rangers in shock fashion, leaving the door open to other targets.
Muscat has now emerged as a favourite at Rangers and looks destined to make a long-awaited move to Govan after sizable interest in the past.
The Light Blues will have to wait until the season ends with Shanghai Port as Muscat lines up new hires to form his backroom team in G51.

Kevin Muscat set for double coach hire at Rangers
Muscat has the seal of approval from Derek Ferguson as he looks increasingly likely to be the next man in the Gers hot seat.
There is positivity behind the appointment of the 52-year-old, but the fact that he won’t join until November is a concern.
The Australian wants to see out the campaign in China, where he could be set to lift the Super League title after the last four games of the season.
This will at least give the Ibrox hierarchy time to prepare for the welcome of Muscat to stand him in good stead to succeed with the Light Blues.

Alan Nixon reported via Patreon on 14 September that one or two backroom staff appointments could be made to supplement the ex-Millwall man’s small team.
The Aussie is the first choice for the Gers after their interview process, and is willing to wait until his job is done in the Chinese league.
Muscat wants Neil McCann with him at Ibrox
Muscat, who has won four league titles in his managerial career, clearly represents a positive option for the G51 club if they are allowing him to delay his move to the Scottish Premiership by a month.
This leaves Rangers back at square one and in a hugely familiar situation to when Philippe Clement was rightly sacked last season.
Barry Ferguson came in then as an interim, and now Neil McCann looks to follow in the former midfielder’s footsteps in Govan.
It looks likely that the 51-year-old could come in until Muscat is ready, before joining the head coach as an assistant manager at Ibrox.
McCann will help set the standards and provide a sense of familiarity to the Gers faithful that they can support moving forward.
