Steven Gerrard left Rangers in ‘financial hole’ as new manager developments picked apart at Ibrox already

Rangers’ issues on and off the field have cost them already this season.

The news that Steven Gerrard turned down Rangers came as a shock to most, but the Gers now need to swiftly move on to other candidates to replace Russell Martin.

Gerrard shared a message of gratitude to Rangers supporters, as both parties have left the door open for a possible Ibrox return in the future.

Rangers could be operating on a budget, as Derek McInnes’ payout clause appears to be a problem standing in the way of the Bears stealing Hearts’ head coach.

Latest developments suggest that Gerrard may have never been the safe choice financially anyway, as the Gers seem to have been hit with a blessing in disguise.

Tom English says Rangers’ financial losses ‘rocketed’ under Steven Gerrard

Rangers spent £20m plus in the summer on signings that have yet to show their best at Ibrox.

Gers fans worry that one of their biggest recent spending sprees could end up going to waste, with the new ownership not spending the money wisely.

Tom English shared insight into Rangers‘ financial situation under Gerrard‘s previous tenure, while speaking on BBC Sport Scotland, and it may be a blessing in the end.

“They’ve spent fortunes on the team, like fortunes, so how big of a budget was he [Gerrard] going to get?

Before, he ripped it up and started again, and he put Rangers in a financial hole, okay, yes, he won them the league, but they spent fortunes.

“Okay, Covid obviously was a factor, but Rangers’ operating losses multiplied on Steven Gerrard’s watch, their wage bill rocketed.”

Considering where Rangers are right now, everything is pointing towards the sensible decision being to bring Danny Rohl to Ibrox.

Rangers’ situation is perfect for Danny Rohl

Sheffield Wednesday’s financial troubles have been well-documented for a long time now, as Rohl worked wonders to keep them in the Championship.

While at Wednesday, Rohl managed to keep a side up who had players that were not getting paid by the club half the time, as he also had to work with what he had.

Though Rangers’ financial situation is nowhere near as bad as the Owls’, Rohl certainly knows how to get the best out of the players he’s dealt, which could put less stress on the board to make new signings.

Rohl is a free agent and could improve the performances from the likes of Oliver Antman and Youssef Chermiti, as a possible reunion with Djeidi Gassama is on the table.
