Rangers hit by another ‘major red flag’ in new manager hunt alongside Steven Gerrard drama
Rangers are still scrambling to find their next manager as the international break draws to a close.
Gerrard’s failed return to Ibrox over the weekend has left fans baffled over who their next manager could actually be.
Danny Rohl is currently the new favourite, yet Hearts manager Derek McInnes has also emerged as a name of interest to Andrew Cavenagh.
However, one manager previously linked with the role also turned down the opportunity, raising more alarm bells as to what is being said in these talks.

Sean Dyche distanced himself away from Rangers job
Sean Dyche quickly turned down the Rangers job after he was linked with the vacancy due to his ties with Kevin Thelwell.
Both Gerrard and Dyche have been out of a job since January, but both have now distanced themselves from the Rangers role relatively quickly.
Writing for the Daily Record on Monday, Keith Jackson was critical of how Rangers have approached their manager hunt, especially Thelwell.
He said: “As soon as it emerged that Thelwell had been speaking to Sean Dyche while Gerrard was winging his way to Heathrow, something about this entire process seemed confused and dangerously muddled.
“That former Everton boss Dyche couldn’t distance himself from it quickly enough – by making it known that he had no wish to be considered – raised another major red flag.”
Gerrard | Stat | Dyche |
292 | Games managed | 558 |
161 | Wins | 192 |
66 | Draws | 161 |
65 | Losses | 205 |
55.1 | Win percentage | 34.41 |
Whilst both records are contrasting statistically, the bottom line is that these two managers have taken charge of 850 matches combined.
Gerrard and Dyche are extremely different from each other in style, experience, and man-management, which leads Bears supporters to question what the 49ers are actually looking for in their next manager.
Russell Martin’s reign in Govan was disastrous, and the board cannot afford to make another mistake as their standing with the fans continues to remain precarious.

Rohl could turn out to be too similar to Martin in terms of his lack of experience managing under heightened pressure, and it seems bewildering that Cavenagh didn’t do everything he could to try and convince Gerrard or Dyche to take charge.
Why Sean Dyche and Steven Gerrard would have both been good appointments
Gerrard knows exactly what it takes to manage at Rangers, and he would have been afforded more patience from the fans due to his proven ability to win the Scottish Premiership title.
Despite receiving criticism for not being competitive in the domestic competitions, the 45-year-old would have instilled a winning mentality within the current Rangers squad.
As for Dyche, his pragmatic style of play would have been a huge benefit to the Light Blues straight away, plugging the defensive issues suffered under Martin.
Dyche could have easily given Rangers a quick upturn in form, and with both candidates now out of the race, whoever becomes the new Rangers manager will face even more pressure to succeed straight away.
