Steven Gerrard message to Rangers fans revealed as Ibrox talks collapse

Steven Gerrard is now out of the running to become the new Rangers manager.

Gerrard looked set for a return to Rangers, however talks with Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe have inevitably fallen through.

With Gerrard not completing his second spell at Ibrox, attention now turns to Danny Rohl and Derek McInnes as the leading candidates for the managerial vacancy.

After the news broke on Sunday night, the 45-year-old gave a message to the Light Blues supporters.

Steven Gerrard wishes Rangers the best as managerial talks collapse

Gerrard was meeting with Marathe and Cavenagh in London this week, and the initial thought was that talks had gone well.

However, it has since been confirmed that it will go no further.

Sky Sports has now shared that Gerrard expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the Rangers fans and wished the club every success for the season ahead.

The majority of Bears fans would have been thrilled to see Gerrard at the helm again, having won Rangers the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title in his first stint in charge.

Gerrard’s record at Rangers

Following Russell Martin’s catastrophic spell as Rangers manager, the majority of supporters would have been over the moon with the appointment of Gerrard. Yet, now the spotlight will be on Rohl, McInnes, and Kevin Muscat over the next few days.

All three are in very different phases of their managerial career, with Rohl unemployed, McInnes enjoying a brilliant start to the season with Hearts, and Muscat on course to win a second Chinese Super League title with Shanghai Port.

The news of Gerrard’s failed move comes as a shock to Gers fans, who have already endured an extremely turbulent start to the 2025-26 season.

With Cavenagh facing increasing pressure from supporters to name a new manager, McInnes would seem like the most sensible option.

Andrew Cavenagh must act quickly to appoint proven Derek McInnes

Rangers made an approach for McInnes back in 2017; however, the 54-year-old did not believe that he was ready for the job at the time.

McInnes joined Hearts in the summer and has them top of the league, two points clear of Celtic.

His proven track record in Scottish football is incredibly desirable, and he looks destined to manage one of Scotland’s big two.

With Gerrard out of the equation, Cavenagh and Marathe should direct all their energy to doing all they can to secure McInnes’ move from Edinburgh to Glasgow.
