Steven Gerrard developments ‘complete nonsense’ at Rangers after new reveal from Ibrox after collapse
Rangers’ hunt for Russell Martin’s successor is set to continue.
Despite Steven Gerrard looking set to take the Rangers job, there was a late twist on Saturday.
After talks with the Gers, Gerrard will not make his return to Ibrox, with reports citing that the timing was not right.
However, a potential return in the future was not ruled out for the Liverpool legend, which has prompted speculation online.

Tom English: Steven Gerrard ‘timing’ issue is nonsense
With Gerrard being the favourite for the Rangers job immediately after Martin’s sacking, it appears that the Gers will now have to move on to other targets.
After winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021, the former manager of the Glaswegian side remained well-liked by the Ibrox faithful.
However, it appears that Gerrard may not be repaying this loyalty, with Tom English questioning the coach’s ‘timing’ excuse for him not returning to Rangers this month.
- Gerrard was at Rangers between 2018-21
- The manager then left Ibrox for Aston Villa
- Gerrard has been continously linked to the Rangers job throughout 2025
Speaking to BBC Sounds on 12 October, English was quick to dismiss the reasoning behind why the former manager chose not to return to Ibrox.
“This whole timing thing, ‘it’s a timing issue,’ that is the reason that has been put out there,” he explained.
“Last time when he was approached for the job, pre-Russell Martin was due to family reasons.
“This is the third time he has custard pied Rangers, if you include October 2021 when he left for Aston Villa.
🗣️ “How many times have Rangers got to get the message here?”

“If you remember, three weeks before he left to go to Aston Villa, they had won a European game 2-0 at home, and he was asked about speculation linking him to Newcastle at the time.
“He said: ‘Do I look happy, do I look settled, stop asking stupid questions then.’ Three weeks later, he was the Aston Villa manager.
“So this is the third time, and there is some chatter that Rangers have left the door open for Gerrard to come back, maybe at a later date, but it is complete nonsense. How many times have they got to get the message?
“I don’t believe that this has got anything to do with timing.”
Rangers fans should not welcome Gerrard back to Ibrox
While Gerrard may have a genuine reason as to why he has not made a return to Ibrox, a pattern is definitely forming.
The Gers are in dire need of a good manager to rescue them from what has been a dire season to date.
Therefore, Gerrard turning down this opportunity feels more like he is protecting his own interests by avoiding a club which is no doubt in a mess at present.
While the former England international has every right to do this, it feels like a betrayal, especially when Rangers are currently on their knees.
If Gerrard had come back, he would have been treated like a hero. However, given the recent developments, Rangers should never look to appoint the manager ever again.
