Rangers insiders adamant as Graham Potter place on Ibrox shortlist revealed already
Steven Gerrard has turned down the chance to return to Rangers.
The manager hunt goes on following the sacking of Russell Martin, and fans will be frustrated that Gerrard won’t be returning to Ibrox.
Danny Rohl has now emerged as the favourite for the managerial vacancy, yet Derek McInnes and Kevin Muscat haven’t been ruled out by the Rangers hierarchy.
Graham Potter has now been linked with the Rangers job, as the search goes on for the new Rangers manager.

Graham Potter not the preferred manager for Rangers and Andrew Cavenagh
In the space of 15 years, Potter has gone from managing in the fourth tier of Sweden to managing Chelsea in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.
Potter’s recent failed stints at Chelsea and West Ham have cast doubt over his ability to handle the high-pressure environment of Rangers, yet Rohl is also not well-versed at this level.
The Sunday Mail has reported in its print edition on 12 October that Rangers insiders are already “adamant” they are pushing ahead with other targets after Gerrard’s snub.
It was added that although Potter is on the shortlist, he is not near the top, as things stand.
Rohl has impressed the Rangers board in early talks, yet he is by far the least experienced manager out of the four leading candidates.
| Stat | Potter | McInnes | Muscat | Rohl |
| Games managed | 490 | 789 | 414 | 89 |
| Wins | 208 | 361 | 221 | 34 |
| Draws | 130 | 182 | 78 | 21 |
| Losses | 152 | 246 | 115 | 34 |
| Win percentage | 42.42 | 45.75 | 53.38 | 38.20 |
Despite having the lowest win percentage of them all, Rohl excelled at Sheffield Wednesday, keeping them in the Championship despite the off-field financial struggles they were facing.
The Rangers’ job is a completely different kettle of fish, and there is definitely an unknown quality about him when it comes to dealing with that sort of pressure.
Martin clearly couldn’t cope with the scrutiny placed upon him, and there is no evidence to suggest that Rohl or Potter won’t follow in his footsteps.

If Potter were to be hired by Andrew Cavenagh, a similar scenario seen under Martin could emerge due to his style of football.
Graham Potter would be a terrible appointment for Rangers
Before being sacked by West Ham in September, his side had the worst defence in the league, conceding from set-pieces in nearly every match.
His philosophy runs parallel to Martin’s, and a possession-based identity is the last thing that Rangers currently need.
What they need is defensive stability with a killer instinct going forward, yet nothing about Potter’s recent CV proves that those issues will be fixed.
Despite being the biggest name on the shortlist, Potter’s appointment would be a huge mistake, and it could seal the fate of the 49ers’ standing with the supporters.
