Graham Spiers stumped by new Steven Gerrard and Rangers reveals before collapse

Steven Gerrard’s potential return to Rangers has been on everyone’s mind in recent weeks.

Talks about Gerrard’s potential return to Ibrox intensified when Rangers finally sacked Russell Martin on 5 October after several poor results.

The Gers are currently eighth in the Scottish Premiership with just one win in seven games.

Rangers are looking at numerous candidates to replace Martin, but Gerrard has always been a strong fan favourite.

There is hope that a managerial change will be enough to turn things around at Ibrox, but it won’t be Gerrard who is responsible for that.

Graham Spiers calls failure to appoint Steven Gerrard ‘bullet dodged’

It has been widely reported that Gerrard will not become the new Rangers manager following talks with the Ibrox hierarchy.

Despite the constant back and forth, the former Liverpool legend felt that the timing wasn’t right and withdrew his name from the hat.

While some Gers fans will be mourning what could have been, Graham Spiers has said via X on 11 October that this outcome is a favourable one.

Chris Jack expected Gerrard to become to new Rangers manager, but things changed quickly overnight, with Spiers saying: “Danger, clawing in the dark.

“I also have to add – and this is bizarre to say in the modern game – but for such a plodding manager in a cycle of mediocrity/failure – this is a bullet dodged.”

Gerrard’s potential return to Rangers has no doubt left fans divided. But most will be hoping that the process doesn’t now turn into a long, drawn-out one.

Steven Gerrard’s record away from Ibrox

Gerrard’s success at Ibrox has often eclipsed his inconsistency at other clubs.

The former Gers manager went on to manage Aston Villa and Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq following his departure.

The difference is monumental and could indicate that he lost his magic touch after leaving the Scottish club. As a result, a return to Rangers may have been a resounding failure.

However, with Gerrard out of the race and the Gers assessing other targets, it’s something that fans will no longer need to worry about.
