Gary O’Neil namedropped in ‘fascinating’ Rangers manager development

Rangers are back to square one after Steven Gerrard rejected them, with managers like Gary O’Neil now in the headlines.

Gerrard has rejected the opportunity to return to Ibrox, which has left many fans in G51 disappointed.

O’Neil could potentially be in the running to replace Russell Martin, with the former Wolves manager one of the names being linked to the Gers in the summer.

With Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe whittling down names on the Glaswegian outfit’s shortlist to fill the vacancy in the dugout, interesting developments may unfold in the coming days.

Gary O’Neil and Graham Potter unlikely candidates for Rangers

O’Neil may not be on the Gers’ final shortlist to become the new manager, Gordon Duncan says.

The Sky Sports journalist also admitted that while Graham Potter’s links to Ibrox are “fascinating”, it doesn’t look like the two former Premier League head coaches will be in the running for the hot seat in G51.

With Martin ending up being a huge failure at the Light Blues, fans will certainly not be enthusiastic about another out-of-work ex-English top-flight boss taking the reins.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on 12 October, Duncan said: “I remember names like O’Neil being considered previously. I think Potter’s a fascinating name this time around. But I think it’s unlikely they’re going to end up on Rangers’ final shortlist.”

The US consortium arguably can’t make another mistake with their managerial appointment at the Gers, with supporters already frustrated a few months into the new ownership in G51.

Gerrard felt like the obvious candidate to stabilise the ship at the Glaswegian outfit, and whoever comes in now will undoubtedly have immense pressure on them.

Sean Dyche to be back in mix for Ibrox vacancy?

Sean Dyche’s potential arrival at Ibrox has been dismissed recently, but with the Liverpool icon dropping out of the race, the former Everton manager may be back in contention.

The English manager built a reputation for playing pragmatic football at the Toffees and Burnley, something that could potentially be needed at Rangers.

Martin’s managerial record at the Gers

The Gers have conceded 24 goals in 17 matches this season, and Dyche will arguably improve the defensive solidity of the team.

With many hoping Gerrard would become the Glaswegian outfit’s next manager, it will be interesting to see who Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises prefer now.
