Frank Lampard at centre of ‘disrespectful’ Coventry claim as Rangers close in on new manager

Frank Lampard has been mentioned among the potential options in Rangers’ search for a new manager.

Rangers sacked Russell Martin last week, and are hoping to announce the appointment of the Englishman’s successor next week.

Decision-makers at Ibrox are mulling over several options, with the next man in the dugout needing to dig the Gers out of a sizable hole.

Steven Gerrard has emerged as the most likeliest next Rangers manager, with an appointment seemingly now nearing at Ibrox.

Derek McInnes has ruled himself out of the Rangers job, with the Scot committed to Hearts after a strong start to the season.

Ross McCormack slammed for Frank Lampard comment

Ross McCormack suggested this week that Lampard would jump at the chance of managing Rangers, but that comment has been baulked at by Coventry City fans.

The former Everton and Chelsea manager was appointed by the Championship club in November last year, and has enjoyed a transformational effect.

The Sky Blues finished fifth last season, losing in the semi-finals of the play-offs to Sunderland, but look to have stepped up a level this season.

Frank Lampard’s impressive Coventry City record

Lampard‘s side are unbeaten at the top of the Championship, having won five of their nine games so far.

More impressively, Coventry have scored a massive 27 goals, and boast at least a 13-goal better goal difference than any other club in the league.

Andy Turner for the Coventry Telegraph gave his thoughts on McCormack’s claim in Saturday’s print edition.

For the time being at least, fans should rest easy when the likes of Ally McCoist tip [Lampard] for the vacant post at Rangers,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the likes of former Leeds United and Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack is so ill-informed and disrespectful with his claim on the Open Goal podcast that: “I think you leave Coventry in a heartbeat to go to Rangers.”

Steven Gerrard the man for Rangers

Coventry fans can rest easy, Rangers are not looking to hire Lampard.

Their target is Gerrard, and the 45-year-old has something to his name that his former England midfield partner does not – a trophy as a manager.

Both Gerrard and Lampard’s managerial careers have ebbed and flowed, but the former’s 2020-21 season in charge of Rangers stands out as the difference between the two.
