Derek McInnes is the most likely Rangers manager as Steven Gerrard talks break down

Derek McInnes is surely a contender for the Rangers job, after the latest on Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard looked set to take over at Rangers, in a heroic return after he won the Scottish Premiership in the 2020-21 campaign.

The 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh need to save face after Russell Martin’s disastrous stint at Rangers.

However, they may have to turn to Hearts boss McInnes after Gerrard‘s stance on a comeback became clear.

Steven Gerrard will not return to Rangers

Steven Gerrard was the prime candidate for the Rangers role, but he is now out of contention.

Chris Jack claimed on 11 October that Gerrard has pulled out of the race after talks with the Ibrox hierachy.

He stated that the Liverpudlian felt that it was not the right time to return to the Govan outfit and the Gers will move on in their search for a new boss.

Derek McInnes has to be the leading candidate now

The Tynecastle boss has to be the top choice for the Gers’ majority owners, they need somebody who will excite the fanbase, and the former Scotland ace would do that.

His Hearts side currently sit top of the league, 11 points ahead of the Auchenhowie outfit, after a blistering start to the campaign.

The board need to repair their relationship with supporters, after the Martin fiasco, and the fans were desperate for Gerrard’s return.

However, the 54-year-old would be an option that would be a suitable alternative for the Gers’ fanbase as he has a proven track record in Scottish football and looks destined to manage one of the big two one day.

It feels like a no-brainer, if Gerrard is not willing to return at this time, and it may actually prove to be the better choice, given how the ex-Bears man has performed in his roles since leaving G51.

It could ultimately all work out for the Light Blues, if they get McInnes instead of the 45-year-old.
