Steven Gerrard demands emerge as Rangers talks set for London

Rangers are days away from appointing their second manager of the season already after the sacking of Russell Martin.

Martin’s Ibrox tenure was destined for failure from the start and lasted just 17 games, the last of those being Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Falkirk last Sunday.

Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe have since drawn up a shortlist of names to succeed Martin, with Steven Gerrard the strong favourite to take over.

Indeed, Gerrard is now in London to hold talks with Rangers chiefs and could be appointed before the end of the week if all goes well.

Further details emerge on Steven Gerrard talks with Rangers

Gerrard enjoyed success as Rangers manager during his first spell, namely winning the Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21.

Legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson praised Gerrard’s start to life as a manager in the past, albeit the Englishman has since disappointed in spells with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq.

Still, he is considered the best choice for Rangers by the majority of fans and there is every hope he will be re-appointed in the coming days.

Further details have now emerged on the proposed talks in London via The Mirror’s print edition on 9 October.

It is claimed that Gerrard is seeking clarity on the new chain of command at Ibrox before deciding whether to push ahead with a “remarkable” return.

Talks are said to not be formal at this stage, with Gerrard simply wanting a better understanding as to how things now operate at Rangers.

Gerrard is said to have initially had reservations due to the quality of Rangers’ squad, but is now at least willing to engage in talks.

The numbers show why Gerrard needs to be re-appointed by Rangers

Gerrard has already proved he has what it takes to end Celtic’s dominance at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The 45-year-old’s 64.8 per cent win rate is the seventh-best of all-time among Rangers managers.

While that may seem slightly underwhelming, it must be remembered he managed more games than others above him on that list.

ManagerWin Ratio
Ally McCoist72.46%
Michael Beale72.09%
Bill Struth68.40%
Dick Advocaat67.18%
Mark Warburton67.07%
Alex McLeish65.96%

Indeed, Gerrard managed 192 matches in total, with the Gers scoring 407 goals and conceding 139 times.

Many managers have simply not ‘got’ Rangers – Martin being the latest example – but Gerrard has been there, done it and very much worn the t-shirt.

It is exactly why he is the right man for the job, and hopefully the appointment is made sooner rather than later.
