Rangers poised for success after what Steven Gerrard previously said at Ibrox amid manager latest

Rangers could soon return to the top of Scottish football.

Rangers have had a horrendous season to date, making it no surprise that Russell Martin faced the sack at Ibrox last week.

The only question that remains is why it took so long for the 49ers to pull the trigger on a manager who had won just one league game by the time of his departure.

Speculation surrounding Steven Gerrard’s return to Rangers is growing by the minute, and if his past words are anything to go by, the Light Blues look destined to taste success once again in the near future.

Steven Gerrard once hailed importance of ‘winning mentality’

You can have all of the quality in the world, but if the mentality of the squad isn’t in the right place, you will face the consequences.

Rangers suffered that fate under Martin, who stripped the Gers of confidence and, perhaps most importantly, their identity.

With Gerrard set to hold talks with Rangers over a potential return, it’s worth noting what he said about the Gers throughout his past spell in Glasgow.

So long as the principles stay the same, Rangers will find themselves back where they belong.

Back in 2018, off the back of Rangers’ 4-1 victory against Hamilton, Gerrard said, as quoted by Rangers News: “I have tried to keep the types of players here that I have seen from the outside have character, guts and who seem like they have a winning mentality to stay and fight for this club.

“The players know, in the face of adversity, you need to stand up and be counted. I think a lot of teams and players would have folded with that equaliser and felt sorry for themselves. My players went the other way, which is one of the pleasing things from the game, looking back on it.”

Rangers need Steven Gerrard’s leadership

Gerrard, as he alluded to in the above quotes, isn’t a manager who will stand for anything less than effort and character, which are two things that Rangers have lacked for years.

That alone will play a significant role in the Gers’ revival, as showcased by his record throughout his last spell at Ibrox.

Gerrard won trophies in Glasgow, and over the course of the 192 games he took charge of, he averaged 2.15 points per game, which is significantly more than Rangers averaged under Martin.

Given the poor start to the season, it’s hard to envision the former Liverpool star achieving any success this year, but he has everything that the Light Blues are missing when it comes to finding it in the near future.
