Kevin Thelwell is risking another Rangers own goal as new hire targeted
Kevin Thelwell is in danger of another spectacular own goal at Rangers.
The Rangers chief has already prompted significant backlash over the decision to hire Russell Martin, as the manager of the Govan outfit.
Thelwell then hired his own son to become Rangers’ head of recruitment, in another highly criticised move.
His latest move as Ibrox sporting director could be the straw that broke the camel’s back, in terms of his relationship with supporters.

Rangers target Wolves man for academy role
Rangers have already hired several figures for the academy, but the next target could be most significant yet.
A report from the Daily Record on 8 October claims that Wolves academy supremo Jonathan Hunter-Barrett is being target to run the Gers’ academy.
It states that the 35-year-old is the prime candidate to take over the role with the Auchenhowie club.
Rangers needed academy upgrade, but Thelwell’s approach is a risk
Thelwell worked at Wolves until February 2020, and Hunter-Barrett was hired by the Molineux outfit in 2019, so it is likely that they worked with each other.
Hiring somebody that he has worked with previously, after already hiring multiple former Everton figures and his own son, could be a controversial decision.
It is nice to see something being done about the Gers academy, as it has been subpar for a number of years.
- The Govan club have not produced anywhere near the level of homegrown talent as they should have in recent times.
- Ross McCausland and Finlay Curtis are the only academy graduates to make any sort of impact on the first-team squad at Auchenhowie in the past couple of seasons.
- It is an area that they need to improve on, if they are to catch up with Celtic
They need to start winning the major honours ahead of their Glasgow rivals, but bringing in another person that the Gers chief has worked with before could end up with a backlash from fans.
Thelwell is already under the microscope, and the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh are already feeling the heat, so his position could come under question in the near future.
