Jermain Defoe may have just confirmed Rangers appointment with Instagram post
Jermain Defoe has made no secret of his desire to join Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff at Rangers should his compatriot land the job.
Gerrard is set to hold talks with Rangers chiefs in London on Thursday, although those discussions are far from advanced.
The out-of-work manager knows Rangers well, of course, having guided the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021.
Defoe has also worked as a coach at Rangers, albeit briefly, and could be about to head back to Ibrox once again.

Jermain Defoe speaks out on Rangers job
Speaking earlier this week, Defoe made clear he wants to return to coaching and implied he’d be open to returning to Rangers.
Indeed, it was reported by Keith Jackson on Wednesday that Defoe would be part of a four-team Rangers backroom staff complied by Gerrard, along with Tom Kilshaw, Gary McAllister and Billy Reid.
And in wake of that news, Defoe has certainly fuelled the flames with his social media activity on Thursday morning.
Defoe uploaded a couple of stories to his personal Instagram account, one showing a Rangers training jacket and another a jug, seemingly given to him for his part in the most recent title triumph.

The first of those images included the caption “WATP”, which is an acronym for “We Are The People”.
When could Steven Gerrard be appointed as Rangers manager?
Russell Martin’s Rangers tenure really was disastrous, and now Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe know they need to get this next appointment spot on.
Gerrard is someone who knows the club inside out and therefore would be a wise choice for the American owners.
- Rangers drew 1-1 with Falkirk last Sunday
- Russell Martin’s exit was confirmed later that same day
- Steven Gerrard soon emerged as the favourite to succeed Martin
- Talks between Gerrard and Rangers chiefs are set to begin on Thursday
- The Gers are back in action on 18 October vs Dundee United
Reports indicate Gerrard wants clarity over the new structure behind the scenes at Rangers, before talks can then ramp up.
It has also been suggested there is no massive rush, so it could be that these talks last days rather than hours.
However, Cavenagh and Marathe know a new manager needs to be in place before the clash with Dundee United a week on Saturday, which is likely when – fingers crossed – Gerrard will make his second Ibrox bow.
