Danny Murphy surprised by latest Steven Gerrard developments at Rangers he has seen
Rangers look set to initiate formal talks to bring Steven Gerrard back to Ibrox, almost four years after he left.
Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers last week, with decision-makers at Ibrox under massive pressure from the fans.
With the Gers now sitting 11 points behind Hearts and nine behind Celtic, their next appointment will be absolutely vital.
Gerrard has emerged as the top choice for Rangers, with the former Liverpool player out of a job after leaving Al-Ettifaq in January.
Rangers are currently holding informal talks with Gerrard, with several issues to work through before serious discussions can begin.

Danny Murphy surprised by Steven Gerrard news
Gerrard’s first stint at Rangers was a massive success. The Englishman, despite having never managed a senior club before, led the Gers to 124 wins in just 192 matches.
His third season in charge would mark one of the most iconic in Ibrox history.
Rangers would win 32 of 38 Scottish Premiership games, going unbeaten, conceding just 13 goals and winning the league in a landslide 102-point success.

It was essentially the perfect season, but fans of the Glasgow club will not expect anything immediately similar if Gerrard does return.
Danny Murphy, who played alongside Gerrard at Liverpool, was asked if he had heard anything about the potential talks.
“No, I haven’t, I’m actually surprised that he’s talking to them,” the former midfielder told talkSPORT on Thursday. “I thought he’d say no. Steve is one of these guys who’s got such belief in himself.”
When asked why he thought he would say no, Murphy said: “Because last time it went well, a bit like an old girlfriend – they always say don’t go back.”
“Stevie has probably got the itch because he’s not worked for a while, and it is a massive club,” he added. “He’s got a rapport with the fans. Short term, you kinda feel like ‘I can’t do any worse’.
“I just think the gap to get back to Celtic and get Rangers back to an even keel is really tough, but I’m always intrigued if he’s working because I like to see him do well.”

Rangers fans should not get ahead of themselves
Gerrard is the clear favourite for the Rangers job; among pundits and fans alike, there is no doubt about that.
But talks are at an early stage, and fans of the Gers should make sure not to get ahead of themselves – other managers may well enter the frame yet.
That being said, Gerrard does look to be edging closer to a return to Rangers, and that should be enough to get any of the Ibrox faithful off their seats.
