Chris Sutton makes remarkable new Rangers admission, it’s all thanks to Steven Gerrard
Steven Gerrard is the firm favourite to replace Russell Martin after Rangers sacked him.
A return for Gerrard to Ibrox has been teased ever since he departed in 2021 after lifting the Scottish Premiership with the club.
Rangers sacked Martin after a series of poor results, with the Gers currently eighth in the league.
Martin needed a police escort after Rangers’ draw to Falkirk to make it safely back to his car. With the fans and leadership unconvinced by this management, his departure was best for all involved.
But with that chapter closed and sealed, the Gers will be looking to their future in the hopes that it shines brighter than ever before.

Chris Sutton believes Rangers can still win the league
Clawing their way to the top of the Scottish Premiership seemed impossible under Martin.
- Rangers have won just one league game all season
- The Gers have netted six and conceded seven goals
However, Gerrard is understood to be in talks with Rangers to become the new head coach. The fans love him, the Gers hierarchy respect him, and the players will be keen to back him if he arrives.
As a result, Chris Sutton, speaking to the Record Celtic Podcast on 8 October, believes he or whoever replaces Martin can still win the league this season.
He said: “The one thing about the prospect of Gerrard coming back is the fans love him, because he stopped Celtic winning 10-in-a-row.
“The new Rangers manager, whoever it is, can look at it a couple of ways. What is he taking over, for a start? That would be a concern. Then you look across the city and ask, how strong are Celtic? The gap is nine points at this moment in time – and obviously you have Hearts up there right now.
“But I honestly don’t think that it’s impossible for Rangers to win the league this season. I’m basing that on what I’ve seen from Celtic this season. January is the big unknown, of course.
“Celtic just need to concentrate and put their own house in order and win games and try and get a rhythm and momentum.”
With the wealth of talent at his disposal, it would not be a surprise to see Rangers come back in spectacular fashion.
Steven Gerrard’s past comments on Rangers are telling
The former Liverpool legend took over at Ibrox in 2018 and went on to lift the Premiership during the 2021/22 season, which was their first in a decade.
The tremendous feat saw Rangers become the second team to win the Premiership while going unbeaten in the league.
After the Gers were confirmed as Champions, he told Rangers that he was hungry to win more with the club.
He said: “I want this to become a successful period and that is going to be the next challenge for this set of players – have you got the hunger and the fight and the determination to go and achieve more?
“And that is going to be the message, certainly in the next few days.”
While he went on to leave Ibrox in November 2021, it is the same winning mentality he demonstrated all those years back, which will get Rangers back on track this season.
Gerrard had just done the unthinkable and guided the Gers to an unbeaten Premiership triumph, and yet one of his greatest concerns was how to reach greater heights.
Therefore, while Gerrard did have his faults at Rangers, there is no doubt he’s the right man to save their season.
