Paraag Marathe and Andrew Cavenagh just did something that Russell Martin failed to do in four months at Rangers

Russell Martin’s ill-fated spell at Rangers is finally over.

Rangers sacked Martin after the draw with Falkirk on 5 October, and now the task of finding his replacement is underway.

Rangers supporters had turned against Martin a long time ago, with many furious that he was even appointed in the first place.

With the 39-year-old now out of the door, Rangers’ search for his replacement is set to progress in the next few days.

Martin failed to do this in his four months at Rangers

The 49ers Enterprises group, led by Paraag Marathe, and Andrew Cavenagh have a huge job on their hands to replace the ex-Southampton man.

Writing in the Scottish Daily Mail (page 70), Calum Crowe claims that the two Gers chiefs have already done something which Martin did not in his time in Govan.

He said: “In penning an open letter to supporters on Monday, the Rangers hierarchy showed more self-awareness in one sentence than the manager had done during his four months in charge.”

49ers and Cavenagh have to get the next appointment right

It is all well and good apologising for the initial hire and showing self-awareness, but none of that matters if Marathe and Cavenagh make the same mistake again.

They need to get the next appointment right, they cannot afford to make the mistake that they did with Martin all over again.

The next manager needs to be the right one, for the Light Blues to compete for the biggest honours and to repair the relationship with supporters.

Steven Gerrard is the fan favourite, and his return would certainly reinvigorate the fanbase, after his previous league-winning spell at Ibrox.

Derek McInnes and Stephen Robinson are also believed to be contenders, and either would be a solid hire, that could improve the Bears, while Sean Dyche has been ruled out of the race.

Whoever the majority ownership appoint, they need to fit the club, and know what it takes to win, if the Gers are going to catch Celtic and retake their place at the top of the Scottish game.
