Derek McInnes compensation claim emerges as huge Rangers decision awaits

Derek McInnes may have a major dilemma on his hands as Rangers intensify their search for a new manager after sacking Russell Martin.

The former Southampton boss lasted just 123 days at the Gers, with the draw against Falkirk in the William Hill Premiership on 5 October the final straw for Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

McInnes has emerged as a candidate at Ibrox, with the ex-Kilmarnock boss in contention to take over the hot seat at the Light Blues.

With the Scottish manager flying high with the Jambos, who sit at the top of the league table, the Glaswegian outfit may have a hard time negotiating his arrival.

Derek McInnes surely has Hearts compensation fee as Rangers must hold talks

McInnes’ contract at Hearts surely must have a compensation fee set, and the Gers will likely need to spend top dollars to sign him, Ryan Stevenson says.

The former Jambo believes if the Light Blues decide to get the Scottish manager from Tynecastle Park, he will have a massive decision to make over a move to Ibrox.

Stevenson would be “flabbergasted” if the Glaswegian outfit don’t have the 54-year-old under consideration in G51 to fill Martin’s vacancy.

The ex-midfielder wrote in the Daily Record on 8 October: “Of course, any club will have to pay top dollar for Del’s services. I’m sure there will be a compensation fee set in his contract. If Rangers decide to meet that, he’ll have a huge decision to make for his career.”

Stevenson added: “But, from a football point of view, I’d be flabbergasted if Rangers don’t have their eye on him.”

It would certainly be shocking to see McInnes accept the job at Ibrox, with Hearts currently in a strong position under Tony Bloom.

Derek McInnes chances of Ibrox move assessed as Hearts in driving seat

McInnes has previously expressed interest in returning to Ibrox, with the Scotsman spending time at the Gers as a player between 1995 and 2000.

While the idea of returning to Rangers might be appealing to the ex-Kilmarnock boss, he’s doing impressive work at Hearts, and it will be interesting to see whether he will want to leave it in its infancy.

McInnes’ record at Hearts this season

The Jambos are top of the league table with six wins and one draw, with a massive opportunity to win the title due to the Gers and Celtic’s struggles.

As things stand, considering the turmoil in G51, McInnes surely has no reason to leave Tynecastle Park, and the Glaswegian outfit may have to look at other options.
