Barry Ferguson shares ‘brutally honest’ answer when asked if he wants Rangers manager job again

Rangers are open to considering all of the available options, as they look to hire a new manager at Ibrox.

Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers on Sunday, with decision-makers in Glasgow now looking to find a replacement during the international break.

The former Southampton boss has left the Gers in a woeful position, with just one win in the opening seven Scottish Premiership games, leaving them 11 points behind leaders Hearts.

Steven Gerrard has emerged as the top choice for the Rangers job, with the former Aston Villa manager having won the league at Ibrox in 2021.

And talks are thought to be advancing, with Gerrard said to be open to re-joining Rangers after leaving Al-Ettifaq in January.

Barry Ferguson refuses to rule out Rangers return

Barry Ferguson said he was not interested in the Rangers job following Martin‘s departure, but the former midfielder is not ruling it out, either.

The 47-year-old took over on an interim basis following the sacking of Philippe Clement last season, and led the Gers to a second-placed finish in the Scottish Premiership.

Ferguson had been serving as an ambassador for the club, but jumped at the chance to lead his boyhood club when asked.

A Rangers legend, the Scot rose through the academy and would go on to make well over 400 appearances for the Gers, winning the Scottish Premiership five times.

Ferguson appeared on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live podcast on Wednesday, and was asked if he would take the job once again.

Listen I’d be lying if I sat here and said no, I would never,” the Hamilton-born hero explained.

Of course, it’s my club. It means a lot to me. I’ve grown up a Rangers supporter, I’ve had the privilege of playing, captaining, and now managing.

And I’ve got the privilege of going back as an ambassador for the club, and I would always be there to help the club. That’s me being brutally honest.

People have asked me, ‘are you in for the job?’ No, I’m happy with what I’m doing just now. But listen, if they want to speak, of course, I’d be there to help in whatever way I could.”

Ferguson knows what it means to manage Rangers

Ferguson is certainly not the most-qualified man that Rangers could hire to replace Martin, but he likely knows, better than anyone, what it means to be in the dugout at Ibrox.

Upon his departure in May, he said: “I’ve already lived the dream as a player and as captain of Rangers, and to do so as head coach in these last three months has been an enormous honour.

Decision-makers at Ibrox would likely have to be desperate to return to their former interim boss, but they would surely know they would be hiring someone ready to give the job their all.
